Dedicated to Haven

Swiss cheese and bullets all the way!
Haven, is there any way we could ever forget this legend of a VW Beetle?
On the evening of April 17, 1998, Haven and Carla took off from my driveway in the notorious Bug to see me run in the first home track meet Moses Lake has had in 10 years.  As they stopped for the stop sign on the corner of Viewmont Drive and Goodrich Road, the bug stalled.  Or that's what it seemed like at first.  Haven and Carla looked back to see flames leaping out of the engine.  They both rushed out and ran to get help.  Carla ran to the house, which was not very far away from this incident, to search for the fire extinguisher.  Haven ran to someone's house to ask for their help, but their reaction was of no more concern than if she had lost a kitten.  Haven would yell, "My car is on fire!"  The homeowner would respond, "Oh.  Well.  That's too bad."  Meanwhile, Carla could not find the fire extinguisher and she ran back to find Haven.  Another neighbor saw what was happening and called the county fire department, which has a volunteer staff only.  Carla found Haven searching the phone book for the number of the fire department.  She couldn't believe what she was seeing and shouted, "CALL 911!"  But all of these efforts went in vain, for the volunteer firemen took 20 minutes to arrive, even though the fire department was less than a mile away.  In the end, the sight wasn't pretty.  All Carla and Haven could do was watch the precious car burn up into one big bonfire which attracted the kids playing in the park and several passer-byers.  Now that Haven has no car, she has to bum rides from friends and family.  The next day, Carla, Haven, and I dressed all in black to mourn the loss of this legendary vehicle.
