Before I get into what my personal feelings are on this particular subject, let me state that I realize this is an extremely sensitive area for some people. It doesn't seem to matter who you talk to, most people have a strong opinion on whether abortion is right or wrong. You have the "pro-choice" group ,who generally see nothing wrong with the idea of abortion. Their basic belief is that the choice should remain with the mother. Next you have the "pro-life" or "right to life" faction, who are completely against abortion under all, or most, circumstances. The main point of their argument is that abortion is murder, plain and simple. Then you have the religious groups. Naturally, they fall in with the "anti-abortion" group, as they believe it to be a sin. While I understand each side's arguments, I don't think that it is as simple as they try to make it out to be. As far as I'm concerned, the religious aspect shouldn't enter into this. Religion is a matter of personal choice, and trying to impose personal beliefs on society as a whole, is just wrong. Now back to why we're here, my opinion on the subject.
There are certain circumstances under which I believe abortion is justified. If the pregnancy poses a significant risk to the mother's life; if there is little or no chance of the fetus surviving to term; or if there is evidence of a sever, and I mean life threatening or fatal, defect present; then I believe that abortion becomes a viable alternative. These are all medical reasons, that can, and should, be verified by a physician before an abortion is performed. Psycologically, the only reason that I believe to be acceptable for an abortion, is if the pregnancy is the result of rape.
I do not believe that abortion should be used as a form of birth control. It is far too traumatic, both physically, and emotionally for that. If you want to play, then you should be prepared to pay. Abortion should be the last possible alternative to an unfortunate situation.
