Happy Independance
Day y'all!!!! **frantically waving Stars and Stripes**
Lots of good feedback
from Issue number Two. Remember this: if you'd rather not receive
this newsletter just send us email at NZChat and we'll take you off the
list, no problems, no questions asked.
Our 2nd Chat date on
June 6/7 was a wonderful success! It's hard to get people together
at this time of year while our time zones conspire to keep us apart,
many people made the exta effort to spend a little time in chat.
At times there were 11 plus people in the room.... and by far the majority
of those were familiar handles. In total around 21 chatters visited
NZ Chat over a 3-4 hour period. A HUGE THANK YOU! to those
who were there, and for making our second chat date such a pleasant time!
Cheers
Maggie and Daggy

ForwardScout is
busy in Westport, New Zealand working on a very cool project. He's
making a film!
They have funding of approx $36,000 to write,
produce and act in a short film. Its a community project, and one of the
objectives is to display some West Coast elements in the film.
ForwardScout would be really interested in your
opinions on the West Coast Lifestyle.
Hey says
"Cos I live here I only know what I know..
and what do you mean you don't know where Westport is... Its on the West
coast of The South Island.":)
Jay (DaggyDog) and Gae were married 16
Years ago on June 18th.
Happy Anniversary you two!!!!!!
From all of us in NZ Chat :) :)
Kiwisnow is still in Jamaica... when last
heard of she had this to say.
"Yamon, we still alive and kicking, and drinking
rum and occasionally taking nourishment :))))))) It's that good Kiwi upbringing
that has has made it easy to live the Jamaican life.
Life on the island is WONDERFUL and we are both
have a blast. I think the Jamaicans really wonder about the 2 silly bloody
Kiwis living here. There are now 5 of us living on the island including
John and I, 2 of the others are with the NZ Dairy Board. It is wonderful
as NZ sells all its dairy products and a lot of meat to Jamaica, so it's
like home away from home. Cricket is a huge game here and everyone keeps
asking me if I am listening to the NZ games..hmmmmmm, never did understand
it much, but they tell us all about it anyway.
We are going to spend Christmas in the USA this
year in the snow BRRRRRRRRR and then the next day head off to Scotland
to see in the millenium...BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR more snow, must have gone
completely
bonkers. Must be too much of this jamaican
rum and Red Stripe beer.
Well folks, we'll keep in touch, puter seems to
be up and running smoothly at the moment shhhhhhhh, dont talk too loud.
Best wishes to everyone and hope all are fit and
well, if not just come on over to Jamaica, and "feel all right" |

ASSIGNMENT NEW ZEALAND:
|
GREETINGS from Marin County, California,
In October 1999, I'm a journalist who'll
be on assignment in New Zealand finding all the wild and wonderful sites
and experiences unique to this country. One of the biggest
challenges has been discovering where I should go, and who I should talk
to, in order to get the best information. My mission is to gather
interesting interviews and exciting experiences that are different from
the usual tourist. And I believe there's nothing better than going
to the "real people" instead of the bureaucrats of the country. Not
that their opinion wouldn't be interesting as well. I would love
to interview your Ms. Shipley, or the Honorable Tau Henare, or Honorable
te Heuheu QSO, or Honorable Lockwood Smith. But getting time with
them is very difficult.
So I ask you:
What do you love most about your country?
What do you love least? Who would you find interesting to be interviewed
from New Zealand? Where are some of the hidden treasures? What are
some things unique only to New Zealand? What social issues do you
think New Zealand handles better than any other place in the world -- homelessness,
health, energy? Who are some of New Zealands most prized artists, authors,
musicians, film makers? What is the some of the newest entrepenurial endeavors
going on in New Zealand? If the world were a perfect place and you
could change anything about New Zealand so it would impact it's future,
what would it be?
If you are inclined to begin a dialogue with someone
who comes from the world of words, and help me answer some of the above
questions, please let me know. Names and addresses of folks you think
I should interview would be appreciated. And most of all, I'd like
to leave the experience having made friends.

the next chats will be and I'll and be there.

"Bravo
Zulu" (nautical term, Good job) to Maggie and Daggy on their hard work
cranking out another newsletter. They have been scouring the earth
looking for lost members of our NZ flock. Bet Daggy never thought
that he would make a good shepherd.....lol
After my trip to Japan,
Hawaii, and Thailand I was looking forward to relaxing at home for the
Summer. My squadron has been getting a lot of message traffic about
sending in the reserves to help out the regular forces in Europe.
I have a feeling that since I'm the most qualified reservist right
now in my section, I could be on the short list. It's no big deal
for me but I'm realizing now that when I signed up I also signed up my
family into the military.
Keep up the good work
and thanks for mentioning me in your piece Daila. Next time I hope it will
be in person....
Take care all....Cheers.

The
Cat
The sound of the stream rushing over the granite
boulders hid the crunching of our footsteps. Carefully creeping over the
granite sands, approaching the rock upon which lay the fresh carcass of
a recently killed doe, this larder of some unknown and obviously large
predator which might even then be watching us with guarded and tense gaze.
Neither I nor the 15 year old boy had any idea what lay in store for us.
We examined the partly eaten body of this once
beautiful and graceful relative of the gazelle, noting the apparent time
that passed since the kill that had without doubt echoed the sounds of
struggle in this sheltered spot in the wilderness.
Our movements disturbed the hidden watcher and
the ever so slight sound of claws scratching upon the granite boulder reached
our ears, alerting us to something taking flight or to the possibility
of attack.
The beauty and grace of the very large cat which
erupted from the shelter of the large boulders was marred by the oddity
of it's appearance. The prominent ear tufts, noticeably protruding dagger-like
canine teeth and serpentine appearance of the pupils of the eyes coupled
with the very yellow color of the pelt. A startling contrast to the normal
chocolate browns and almost tabby-cat appearance of the cougar. No cougar
this, nor any cat we were familiar with !
It seemed time had reversed itself and we were
looking at a living memento of another time, the sabre-tooth tiger !
The relative stillness of the moment, shattered
by the sound of our rifles, seemed to only accelerate the departure of
the predator. Like a wraith it slipped from sight, bobbing to the surface
of the landscape like a cork on a wind-disturbed pond. Then it was gone.
