Tuesday
with Morrie
(Mitch Albom)
Tuesdays
With Morrie is an incredible book about an old man's walk
through death and the lessons learned by a young friend
who watched him die.
Mitch
Albom is a young sports writer for the Detroit Fress Press, who
had Morrie Schwartz as a Professor in college nearly twenty
years ago. One night while flicking through the t.v. stations
Mitch caught his old professor on Ted Koppel's "Nightline".
What he hears stuns him. His old professor is dying of ALS
or Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a slow killing neurological
disease. Mitch, a world weary, cynical man ,goes to visit
Morrie. This begins the first of many Tuesday visits with
his old professor. Morrie teaches Mitch about the meaning
of life and not to fear death. One of my favourite quotes
is "Money is not a substitue for tenderness, and power is
not a substitute for tenderness. I can tell you,as I'm sitting
here dying, when you most need it, neither money nor power
will give you the feeling you're looking for, no matter
how much of them you have."
From
the beginning until the end I was completely consumed by
the story Mitch told about his Tuesday visits with his former
college professor. This story answered all of my questions
regarding life. It motivated me to truely value life and
the people I love. This book encouraged me to live my life
to the fullest. I was impressed with Morrie's attitude towards
dying. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed man manages
to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Instead
of mourning his illness he took the time to inspire his
friends, family, and the world. I cried and laughed throughout
the book. I will forever be touched by this book!
This is a universally touching story told with such grace
and humility.
