Earth's Final Moments

Chapter Nine

Human vs. Demon. The earth met with a resounding crash, evil fighting against a hopeless desparation. They were the last, Elysion would be the final stand. The monsters swarmed the humans like insects, barely phased by the efforts to kill them.

"Venus Crescent Beam Smash!" Kunzite paled, watching a monster fly over his head. Turning, he saw the woman give him a V for victory and dash back into the heat of battle. There were moments when she was familiar, but because of the situation, he would have to wait.

He never thought a battle could look so bleak, despite the amount of dead monsters piled at his feet. "There's no end to them! What are we fighting, the very heart of hell?"

His friends were in similar situations, the sailor senshi close by their sides. Kunzite smiled, chuckling slightly. The five women were here to save a planet that may die within a few short hours, but they refused to give in to the exhaustion he saw so clearly in their faces.

"Fire Soul!" Mars screamed, burning her way through the mass of arms and legs. Jedite was down, blood pouring from a wound on his head. Protectively, she stepped over him, definately glaring at their death.

"Rei, get out of here!" Jedite growled, trying to remain conscious.

"No! Friends stick together, even hopless ones."

Jedite gasped, hearing a strange note in her voice. "Is that concern, Rei? For me?"

She smirked, "Don't get the wrong idea. I still don't like you." Mars cried out, her leg cut off by razor sharp claws. "Damn that was stupid," she hissed through tight breath, falling against Jedite.

"Rei!" Shaking his head clear, he decapitated the monster that had disfigured his fiery senshi. "Dear god Rei, why didn't you stay on Lunaria? I would have come back," he lied, tears stinging his eyes. She was loosing a lot of blood, and her breath was heavy and irregular. "Don't you dare die on me, Princess Rei! I forbid it!"

"Can if I want to," she whispered. Rei was thankful that she couldn't feel where her leg had been, refusing to see where it had been cut off at. "Jed..ite," she gulped, trying to remain conscious. "I..."

"Shh..." he whispered, pulling her tightly against his warm body. "Please don't talk. Everything will be ok."

"Liar," she smiled, despite the terrible weariness of her body. "Hold me," she begged, shivering violently. "I don't want to die alone. Being a princess is a curse, you're so lucky sometimes."

"Rei," he choked.

"I... lied," she whispered, cupping his beautiful face in her hand. "I did... lo..ve..."

She never finished, Jedite watched her die in his arms, a smile on her face. "Rei..." he shook her shoulders, hoping that she was only asleep. "Please... You have to wake up... You promised to dance with me, remember..."

Her eyes remained tightly closed, her fuku changing back into her simple dress. "No... Don't leave me!" he screamed. "Rei!"

Bowing his head over her dead body, he let the demons come, hoping he would be with his love soon. "I love you too, Rei, my fire senshi." The yoma was swift, he never felt it slit his throat.

Sailor Moon wheezed, her blond curls pressed to her forehead. 'How many is that? Twenty, a hundred?' Endymion was pressed against her back, slicing through the throng of bodies with his large sword, tears running freely down his face.

So much had been lost, several of his people lay lifeless on the streets of his home. 'Mother, father; I'm sorry. I tried to save this city.'

"Damn!" Sailor Moon growled, dropping her broken blade.

"What happened?" Endymion demanded, unable to turn around.

Sailor Moon was desparate, wondering what she would use to fight. Suddenly a thought occured to her, she didn't have time to think. Grabbing the tiara from her forehead, she concentrated her energy, feeling it pulse with power. "Moon Tiara Action!"

Endymion chanced a quick glance over his shoulders, watching in stunned awe as a frisbee cut through several of the demons, quickly returning to Sailor Moon's hands to be refired several more times. "Incredible! It's faster than a sword!"

"Easier to use to! Things don't look to good, Endymion."

"We can't give up."

His voice was strained and she wanted nothing more than to pull him close and mumur soft words of comfort. "We won't."

"Ami, look out!" Zoicite threw the water senshi to the ground, covering her head with his arms. The attack had hit her in the chest, leaving a hole. No matter how hard he tried, she bled from the exit wound, or other injuries that she had substained throughout her body. Ami trembled, her stomach rising and falling slowly with each strained breath. "Are you alright?"

"Do you want the truth," she teased, darkness swimming before her eyes. Strange, Ami had always thought death would be scary, but suddenly she wasn't so frightened. It was almost peaceful. She only regretted leaving the battle unfinished.

"Stay with me, Ami." He combed back a strand of blue hair, sickened at the ashen look of her cheeks.

"I'm so tired."

"No! You have to stay awake!" Zoicite choked.

"It's cold, colder than the seas of Mercury."

He carressed her icy cheek, running a gloved finger across her blue lips. "Please, you have to try! I... I love you."

She smiled weakly, touching his blond hair. "Thank... you..."

Her eyes closed, hand falling to her side. He saw her fading away from him, her fingers already stiff. "Ami!"

Jupiter and Venus felt their friends fall, anguish twisting in their hearts. They knew the battle was hopless, but they had made a promise they weren't about to break. Looking into each other's eyes, they smiled.

Nephrite and Kunzite saw the change in the two women, "What's wrong?"

"We're glad to have met both of you," Venus said, her blue eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I just wish..."

"Wish what?" Kunzite whispered, feeling drawn to the senshi. Without warning, she flung her arms around his neck and kissed him. Surpised, he could only stand there before he circled one arm around her waist, cupping the back of her neck with his other.

Pulling away, she gave a shaky laugh. "Wish that I could have showed how much I loved you."

"Minako...?" He asked, recognizing her voice and soft fragrance.

"The one and only."

She turned to run off again, but Kunzite refused to let her go. "You're not dying!" he snarled, gray eyes snapping dangerously.

"Let go of me!"

"You're not dying, not without me you're not!"

"What? But..?"

"Our entire mission is to protect the high prince of Earth; without him we wouldn't be here. Besides, we can't let you have all the glory."

"You'll die with us," Jupiter promised, hoping to talk the generals out of their decision.

"So be it," Nephrite accepted. "How many of these bastards do you think we can take out?"

"All of them! They'll never forgive us," Kunzite said, wishing he could say good-bye to his best friend.

"No, but that's not what we're here for."

Looking around, all of the people except for themselves, Serenity and Endymion were dead. The priest, Helios, and his priestesses had vanished. Making a small circle, the two women and two generals began to concentrate, each drawing on an inner power that began to glow around them. "Serenity, Endymion, live awhile longer."

"Venus Power!"

"Jupiter Power!"

The crystals responded to their summon, shooting towards the sky and joining together. Resting his head against the top of Venus's head, Kunzite gladly gave her his energy, Nephrite doing the same for the lightning senshi. The sky flashed, the earth was consumed in ray of lights that descimated the armies of the enemy. When the dust settled, the light fading away, the bodies of Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Nephrite, Kunzite, Jedite and Zoicite had disappeared, destroyed by the blast. They had won the battle.

Serenity and Endymion were surrounded, on the verge of collapsing. Lifting her head, Sailor Moon gasped in horror. "No! What are they doing?"

She tried to break free of the monsters, but it was too late as she was knocked to the ground on top of Endymion; the earth covering their bodies. "Mina!" she shouted to her friends.

Endymion pinned her body to the ground, sobbing brokenly. He knew what his friends had just done, his heart shattering at the loss. Everything, in the blink of an eye, had been stolen from them. All that remained of his once proud kingdom, were ruins and a devastated Lunarian princess clutching his arms. "Why?" she screamed.

He had no answers. After the energy had passed, they stood, staring at the land with unbelieving eyes. His people were dead, they were the only survivors. "God..." he choked, his eyes blank.

Sinking to the Earth, he cradled Sailor Moon in his arms, rocking her back and forth. Long after they had been found and taken to the moon, they continued to cry, sinking refuge with each other. How could they go on when the lives of their friends had been obliterated?

"Any change?" Queen Mercury asked her friend, the light gone from her eyes. The death of the inner princesses had sucked the heart out of the alliance, they had very little reason left to continue the fight anymore.

"No," Selinity said with sorrow. "How did everything go so wrong? They won't talk to me, themselves or anyone! I can't help them!" she cried, bowing her head in defeat.

"Stop!" Venus cried, clutching her best friend. "Breaking down won't save them. I don't think we were meant to."

"What do you mean?"

"I'm saying this was supposed to happen. I don't know how or why, I just know that one more thing is going to occur before things are able to return to normal. Those crystals were found for a reason, we were the holders until the right people were born to carry them."

"Why couldn't we find their bodies?" Selenity cried. "The earth looks like a wasteland, as if nothing had ever lived there."

"I don't know."

Serenity couldn't sleep, nor could the man that held her in his arms. For hours, they would stare at the blue planet, the tears never stopping. Each had a reason to cry, having both lost people that had always been a part of their lives.

"My little servant," he whispered one day, his voice soft and distant.

"Endy... There's something I want you to have."

Tilting his head, he looked down at her hands, a golden locket held in their palms. Shaped like a star, she opened the front clasp, a soft and sad melody echoing in their ears. It was their song, the one that had united them together. "Sere..."

"Please take it, my love. Keep it close to your heart."

He held her, loving the woman with all his heart. They had won the battle, but both knew that the war was flying towards them. "Serenity, we're going to die."

"I know, I know."

"We're under attack, we're under attack!" Artemis and Luna screamed. "All that are able, grab a sword and fight!"

Selinity stared at the wave of darkness over her beautiful kingdom, a feeling of dread and despair washing over her. 'Did I cause this? Should I have let the outer kingdoms have the silver alliance?'

A hand rested on her shoulder, her friends refused to leave her side. 'King Sol,' she whispered, 'Give me strength.'
