Superbad

Two geeks are on their last year of high school and they want to do something fun so they go and buy some beer to get some girls drunk and sleep with them. Superbad is another iteration on the Fast Times at Ridgemont High clone genre, another story about a pair of losers who want to get laid before they leave high school and set off for college. The losers in question are Seth and Evan.Superbad follows them on a night of hunting booze and poon, that as they so often do, goes totally awry and leaves them lying in vomit somewhere. Both Seth and Evan are supremely talented comedic performers, but much of the time they’re completely wasted here on dialogue that can’t seem to get over a bad case of Tourette’s syndrome. It’s an R-rated raunch comedy so you expect a lot of vile, over the top profanity but Superbad takes it to an entirely new level; substituting frequent uses of the words “cock”, “balls”, and “fuck” for actual jokes. Luckily, Seth and Evan aren’t the whole story here. Superbad seems as if it was written to make them the focus of the film, but somewhere in the editing room I suspect someone wised up and realized they needed something else. That something else is their third-wheel friend McLovin, who starts out the movie as a footnote but by the end of the film his sub plot is the one that will have you rolling in the aisles. While Seth and Even wander around town screaming “balls!” at people, McLovin encounters two out of control cops. They take him on a whirlwind tour of irresponsibility and police brutality; boozing, beating, and shooting their way across the city in a wanton orgy of policeman gone wild with McLovin along for the ride in the back seat.

Just imagine the pain of getting surgery and being able to feel it. Samantha the patients wife, the patients doctor, and the doctors assistant all had a plan to kill the patient. Being “awake” during surgery is exactly the position Clay Beresford finds himself in after he’s admitted to the hospital for a heart transplant. Prior to surgery, the billionaire, who suffers from a weak heart and a rare blood type, gets his affairs in order, which include telling his prudish mother about his girlfriend of over a year, and then marrying the girl before undergoing heart surgery. While Anesthesia Awareness might be a fascinating plot device, the truth is once Clay goes under (or doesn’t), he can’t move. He can’t scream out, and he can’t interact with the plot that is unfolding around him. While the story attempts to get around this by having Clay leave his body and view his own memories from a different point of view.
