Part 2: Malaya and Singapore

This first Malaysian missive winged its way in on October 2nd '99

Hello everyone,
I've arrived in Penang. We did it in the usual leisurely Thai manner and were two hours late - not bad. I've just managed to find this internet cafe it seems like the only one in town, this may have caused a problem on the meeting up with Rich again front as I was suppose to tell him where I was staying, fortunately the bus I got droppped me outside the hostel that I said I would try and book into so hopefully he'll find me.
I've had my first thing stolen which happened to be my wallet - I feel like a real traveller now. It happened when I was changing buses, as the Thai's make you do for no apparent reason and I had to go into the office to get another ticket and change some cash into Ringitts. I went to put the money into my wallet and it had disappeared, The assistant showed me all the drawers and the ownwer (who was a really nice guy) lifted his t-shirt up, It was really strange we just couldn't find it. Fortunately me being the organised one (yeh right) had removed all my cards from it into my safety belt the only things gone were a little cash, my Under 24 card, youth hostel card and my temporary diving card. These may cause some inconvenience but not a great loss.
The journey was long and we got to Penang at 10:30pm (they are one hour ahead of Thailand - I am now 7hrs ahead of England) The town is nice, it has interesting bits and is less hectic than BK. I don't think it's too expensive, more so than Thailand. I had a maly meal brought on the side of the street today, it was nice but there were dodgey unrecognisable bits of seafood in it (I think) which I tried bits of but couldn't bring myself to eat it all, if anything just in fear of getting a dodgey tummy.
I had to go back to the hostel at 1:30 as I was beginning to burn - the sun is v. intense here, and a malay guy pointed out that I was RED. I stayed in until 3pm but it's now started to rain and all the stalls and interesting things are closing, I think that may because it's Saturday. I think we'll stay here tomorrow as Rich ( if he finds me ) will want a day to look around, he'll probably go to the beach!!!, I'm either going to go up Penang hill or go to the bird park I haven't decided yet.

Malaysia chapter 2 arrived on October 4th.

Hello again everyone,
I'm still on my own and loving every minute.
I met up with Rich on Sunday morning he was staying in a different hostel and still with Ben and Adam. I went off on my own for the day. I went up Penang Hill and got extremely wet on the way down, when it rains it rains and there's a lot of it recently, I had to wear my mac and even then I got soaked. I'd walked down this 7km hill, in the rain, to go to the botanical gardens but it was raining too hard and this Malay guy offered me a lift back to my hostel so I'm afraid that beat the hanging around for the bus option.
I met up with the lads later and we went for a v. expensive Indian in a posh restuarant, it was as good as you get at home.
I love Malaysia, the people are so so friendly and genuinely helpful. Penang is great I was really sad to leave but I caught a bus to the Camerone Highlands in the morning and that's where I am now. This place is amazing, mostly because of this hostel I'm staying in. The guy that runs knows everyones name (80 of us) and introduces you to everyone, it is so easy to talk to people and I have met loads of people.
We went for a jungle treck this morning with everyone it was great, I did a classic Topham though, this lad and I were at the front as we were going up this hill talking about rugby ( I'seen a few matches unfortunately not england or Wales, but it's good because you get Aussie commentry and they still think that Eng and Wales will win their groups even though Wales didn't play that well) Anyway this lad (shane) and I went the wrong way and kept walking for about 15mins in the wrong direction until we noticed that it was v. quiet behind us. We managed to find the group though although it took us about 45mins maybe longer, we got a cheer when we found them at the top of the hill.
I'm going to try and extend my stay in Malaysia, it suppose to be easy but because I'm flying to Bali apparently all the flights are booked up and it's quite difficult to get on one without going on the reserve list I might wait till I get to KL (probably tommorrow) to sort it out as it will be easier face to face.- we'll see. I'll meet up with Rich probably in Kl but he really wants to go straight to Bali.

...and chapter 3 on the 7th of October:

Hi everyone,
I've arrived in KL. It's a really nice city, there's not loads to do but it's not too expensive and it feels safe. I travelled down with a guy called Mark who I met in Daniels lodge in the Cameroon Highlands, He's a good laugh we get on really well. We arrived in KL about 3:30pm yesterday and because he thought he might be staying one night only we tried to do as much as we could. This involved walk all over the city in Torential rain, The locals were giving us very funny looks especially the ones waiting outside the Posh hotel where we decided we ought to catch a a taxi before we got pneumonia. we're both used to being cold though the past 2 nights I've had to use my 3 season sleeping bag and 2 blankets in the Highlands - don't you feel sorry for me. Mark decided to spend another day in KL today which is good, and tomorrow we're both going to Singapore to meet up with others from Daniels lodge. There are loads of people I know going to Bali so I'm hoping I will meet up with loads of them. Mark is flying out on Saturday night and hopefully Rich will be there by then, so I won't be on my own for long, I'm sorry to leave Malaysia but can't wait for Bali I've heard really good things about it.

Then a quickie from Singapore on saturday 9th October:

Hello people,
I'm in Singapore, Rich is also here somewhere but I've yet to find him the problem is do I stay put and let him find me or vice versa. Singapore is also a nice but expensive city compared to the rest of Asia, saying that it is still slightly cheaper than Britain. We had a fantastic last night in KL. I'll tell you about it when I write again ( e-mail is expensive here) We had a good night last night although I was v. tired. We had Singapore Slings in the Raffles Hotel which cost us 8 pounds!!!!! but, it had to be done.
Off to Bali tomorrow night with Rich. Sorry this is such a short mail.
Lots of love
Caitlin
