In Flames play extremely melodic, Swedish Death Metal similar in style to music from bands such as Dark Tranquillity and At The Gates. The band's music relies heavily on harmonizing guitars and classical influences, although some minor folk influences can also be heard in select tracks. The vocals are a mix of the Black Metal and Death Metal styles. A violin and viola are incorporated into In Flames "Lunar Strain", which not only add variety and uniqueness to the music, but also enhance the classical influences. Two instrumentals are included on this release. Some well played acoustic guitar is also present on two tracks. One track even features melodic, female vocals. Overall, the music isn't incredibly fast or heavy, however the intensity and power created by In Flames' style combined with excellent production allow the listener to become fully engrossed by the music.

There are some very unique tracks present on "Lunar Strain". Track three, entitled "Starforsaken", begins with an excellent, melodic violin intro. Another track, entitled "Everlost - Part II", is composed of well played acoustic guitar accompanied by melodic, female vocals. This track ends with some mellow, bluesy lead guitar. The second instrumental on "Lunar Strain", entitled "Hargalaten", is a unique mix of melodic guitar, violin, viola, and folk influences. The combination of these elements results in a unique and quite powerful track, completely different from anything I've ever heard before.

In Flames' "Lunar Strain" is simply one of the best Metal releases I have had the pleasure of listening to. I highly recommend this CD.
