Lord Belial play rather atypical, melodic Black Metal
incorporating Swedish Death Metal influences. The music on
"Kiss the Goat" features better musicianship and production than
typical Black Metal. The music is generally fast, but there are
frequent midpaced sections as well. While this is definitely a
melodic release, and while there are some very nice guitar
melodies and harmonies throughout the CD, most of the melodies
on this release are not overly profound. However, in comparison
to typical Black Metal, the melodies/harmonies on this release are
certainly better developed. One of the most distinguishing features
of Lord Belial's music is the intense Black Metal vocal style.
Unlike the raw, throat torturing Norwegian Black Metal vocal
style, Lord Belial incorporate a more powerful, solid vocal style.
This original vocal approach is very effective, in my opinion.
Every once in awhile the vocalist will let out an intense yell, which
is especially gripping. Another interesting aspect of Lord Belial's
music is the addition of a female flutist. However, only a few
tracks from this release include flute, and even these interludes are
quite limited.
My personal favorite track from "Kiss the Goat" is the sixth track,
entitled "The Art of Dying", which is an excellent but short
instrumental composed of well played acoustic guitar
accompanied by some melodic, subtle lead guitar. There are some
very nice melodies/harmonies throughout this release on tracks
such as "Grace of God", "In the Light of the Fullmoon" (which
includes a slow interlude of harmonious guitars), and the opening
track, "Hymn of the Ancient Misanthropic Spirit of the Forest".
The final track includes a nice finale combining melodic flute with
the ominous knell of a church bell.
While I wouldn't go so far as to proclaim Lord Belial's "Kiss the
Goat" a masterpiece, it is certainly a very enjoyable work of
unique, melodic Black Metal which I recommend to all listeners of
melodic Black Metal and Swedish Death Metal.
