"Ancient God of Evil" is a mix of Death and Black Metal, with
some subtle and scattered Doom Metal influences. The music is
very melodic and well played, and the production is extremely
good. There is quite a bit of double bass, however most of
the music isn't very extreme. Most tracks begin with short,
mellow, "mystical" intros which are suddenly interrupted by the
main song. Personally, I wish Unanimated could have merged the
intros into the main songs with a little more subtlety. However,
that's only a minor complaint. Most tracks, if not all, feature lead
guitar. While most of the lead guitar is rather simple, it usually
helps to enhance the music. The vocals are, for the most part, a
mix of Death Metal vocals and Black Metal vocals. At times, the
music and vocals exhibit definite similarities to Dissection,
especially the first track, "Life Demise", which sounds extremely
similar to Dissection. Keyboard, clean and acoustic guitar, and
interesting vocals are common throughout the CD, especially
during the intros. The intro to the final track is an excellent piano
piece that lasts about half a minute.
"Ancient God of Evil" contains one instrumental entitled
"Mireille". It begins with a clean guitar intro and is composed
mainly of melodic lead guitars. This track is definitely one of the
highlights of this CD. The four tracks that follow "Mireille" are
noticeably heavier and faster than the four that proceed it,
especially the final two tracks of the CD.
Overall, Unanimated's "Ancient God of Evil" is a very good
release. I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys melodic
Death Metal or Black Metal.
