The Boys Are Back In Town
The Backstreet Boys are back on top of the albums chart this week as "Backstreet's Back" opens at number one with approximately 67,000 units sold in its first weeks. This eponymous debut album led the chart last January 19th. The 7-month wait between chart-topping releases marks the shortest period of time between number one albums performed by the same act in chart history. This quick turnover is also only the second time ever that an act has had two number one albums in a single calender year. The first time it happened was in 1995 when "Live At The BBC" and "Anthology 1", both by The Beatles topped the chart in January and December of that year respectively. "Live At The BBC" which was released during the Christmas season in 1994 held down the number one position for the last week of the year and was assumed to hold down the top spot for two more weeks in 1995 when The Record, the compiler of the official charts at that time, was on holiday.
"Backstreet's Back" is also an immediate success all over Europe debuting at the top of the charts in Norway, Austria, Finland, Germany and Spain. "Backstreet's Back" also enters at number one in the Netherlands, where it becomes only the ninth album to do so according to journalist Johan van Slooten. In the United Kingdom, the Boys only managed a number two debut last week with the group Texas taking the top spot with "White On Blonde"
The Orlando, Florida-based pop group continues to monopolize the singles chart in Canada holding down no less than 6 singles in the top 50. Two versions of "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" are at number 2 and number 7. "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" is at number 12, "Get Down (You're The One For Me)" climbs to number 23 and two versions of "Anywhere For You" at numbers 29 and 41.
