Notes:
A full 8 months went by between the recording of TF and CS... and I think my increased experience in the studio comes through loud and clear. I spent the better part of the summer working on songs, and I like to think my growth and maturity are evident as well. It's got plenty of curse words, but I really decreased them in amount and I think I began to chill out a little. The subject matter is still fairly serious and a little angry, though. The overall sound quality of this album is far and above anything I had done previously. I can actually listen to this tape now. Scream 2 and I Don't (Stan's favorite track) are both classics. Catchin' Z's is pretty cool and innovative too - I used a live in-studio alarm clock set to go off in the middle of the song, and it worked! Rob G actually does a verse on this tape, even though I actually wrote it. Rob, Jay and Josh all came down to the studio and went crazy for the little shout out track, Epilogue. That was a blast... Jay is nuts. As you maybe can tell there was sort of a concept for this tape... unlike others. It begins with a preface and ends with an epilogue, with the songs in between acting as chapters. Each chapter is basically a feeling I had at that point. I don't know if it works, but that was the idea! I still sound like I'm trying to be too hardcore on this tape, though. Ah, well.
At least 12 copies were made for friends. I also made a batch of three song samplers (with Scream 2, I Don't, and Catchin' Z's) that I sent out to different management companies. I sent 4 out, with SASE envelopes - just asking for an opinion - but never got one response.
Scream 2 - I loved the beat for the original Scream, but I didn't think my lyrics for the old one were as good as they should have been, so I re-wrote it and this one is genius. I think it's one of my best ever, and definitely the highlight of this tape.
Off - this is how I'm comin'...
I Don't - Stan's fave track, this one is based on all the things I don't do. Kinda negative, but it comes off well.
I Know Wassup - Trying to come clean for acting like I was hardcore.
Four Against One - inspired by the Rodney King incident. This was a great concept but I sound like a serial killer. The beat is slammin', though.
Catchin' Z's - for all the MC's that slept!
Kickin' Back - the subtitle for this track is "Wit a Dew" - a song in homage to the green, sticky liquid that fills my veins. Great beat, sounds a little corny in the end.
Joe Bob's a Prick - yet another unrecorded gem, this one's about my freshman year roommate from Texas. I think the title sums it up pretty well.
I Can Take It - this ended up as "Bring It Strong" (New Day) with completely re-worked lyrics.
Lyric of the Album : "I'm in the house, you ain't even in the garage - but you're still on my dick like a pair of camouflage drawers" (Can't Stop)
Honorable Mention : "The koo-koo klucked-up punks with the white sheets, the kind you and me only use when we sleep" (Scream 2)
In between CS and ND, Rob and I did our little Live EP and that is when Rob began to write all his own lyrics. We did a number of tracks and two of them ended up on ND...
