The Songs : Everything

You burned my letters in a 4th of July display
I saved yours in a shoebox for a future rainy day
could it be that I believed in our probable dismay?
could I even know that we would not go all the way?

Oh, but you knew better
to you, it was fine
So I gave you back each letter
highlighted and underlined
with every word you swore was true
just to remind you

You were wrong
and now I'm gone
but I remember
'cause I kept everything
you were wrong
and now you're gone
but I have everything

There was some discrepency on who ended things with whom
at the end of that phone call, I thought I said we were doomed
but there it was in black & white, proclaiming it was you!
I disagreed, so I freed up my attitude

Yet you were somehow civil
me, I played it cruel
I brought you down to my level
over-reacting like a fool
and I regret I spoke too soon
but I had to remind you

You were wrong
and now I'm gone
but I remember
'cause I kept everything
you were wrong
and now you're gone
but I have everything

You stole my first kiss
in that yellow dress
you were my weakness
no one compared
with that flower in your hair
when you told me you loved me
I could only agree
what did you really mean?

You were wrong
and nothing's gone
I still remember
'cause I kept everything
you were wrong
and now we're both gone
but I kept everything

Background:
Lyrics: Based in large part on the end of my relationship to my 7th grade girlfriend, Kristi. Really. And that I'm a pack rat. She was the first girl I kissed, when we went to a big school dance together where she had a flower in her hair with a yellow dress. And I totally did give her back the love letters she wrote me, with highlights. Schmuck was I. Well, I was 13.
