Very little is known about the man called Jack Frost. He appeared at Bucky's radio telecast urging superheroes to join the Liberty Legion where he discovered a Nazi saboteur ready to unleash a grenade against the Legion and the crowd of innocent bystanders. Jack Frost arrived just in time to freeze the grenade in the terrorists hand and defeat him. Bucky quickly accepted Jack Frost as the seventh and final member of the Liberty Legion. Jack Frost assumed he was an alien, but could not recall his true origin. Although he was never truly comfortable with mankind, he served faithfully for the duration of the war. As a Legionnaire he battled menaces like the Iron Cross, the Red Skull, and U-Man.
Following the war, as his comrades formed the All-Winners Squad, Jack Frost disappeared. He went to the frozen Arctic wastelands, hoping to discover some clue about his past. While there, he was attacked by a giant ice worm. Jack grabbed onto the worm's tail, and tricked it into devouring it's own tail in order to swallow him. Inside the worm, Jack lowered its body temperature in order to freeze it. This also put him into suspended animation (something very popular with the heroes of the 40s--eric).
He was discovered many years later by Captain America, frozen inside a block of ice. Chipped free from the worm's belly by eskimoes, Jack Frost was worshipped by them as an ice god. However, Cap broke him out of the ice in time to battle the reactivated ice worm. Jack had been transformed by his years in frozen captivity, and emerged as a figure of rock solid ice (very similar to the X-Men's Ice Man; see the picture at left--eric). Cap was in danger of being swallowed by the worm when Jack Frost came to his aid and ultimately sacrificed himself to save his old friend. Jack again tricked the worm into swallowing it's tail, thereby trapping himself inside the worm's belly once again. Moments afterwards, Thor arrived and deduced that Jack Frost was actually an Asgardian ice giant that wasn't, well....giant. Perhaps teased about his comparitively diminutive stature, Jack Frost fled Asgard and went to earth, where he joined the Liberty Legion. Not quite as tragic an ending as most of his fellow Legionnaires, but still pretty sad! However, since Jack Frost survived being eaten by the worm once before, it's not unreasonable to think he may awaken again one day. Special thanks to Francisco Araujo da Costa for the information on Jack Frost's final appearance.
