Namor, The Sub-Mariner!

The Avenging Son

Namor, The Sub-Mariner!

The Avenging Son of Atlantis, Prince of the Blood...whatever you call him, Namor was and is one of the most powerful and short-tempered heroes in the Marvel Universe.

His origin begins somewhere around 1920, as an American steamer heads into the Arctic ocean to blow up some icebergs. Unknown to the captain of the ship, the legendary lost city of Atlantis was right below him. During the explosions part of Atlantis was destroyed and King Thakorr sent his daughter Fen to investigate. She was supposed to form a search party to go with her, but she went on her own. Fen was captured by the sailors and fell in love with the captain. They began a romance and were married on the steamer. However, Thakorr sent a war party to retrieve his missing daughter. In the course of the struggle, the captain was killed and the now-pregnant Fen returned to Atlantis. Her mutant child had Atlantean features but pink skin, and had incredible strength. Thakorr named the boy Namor and taught him to hate surface dwellers. When he grew up, Namor launched a one-man assault on the surface world. He was dubbed the Sub-Mariner and often found himself in conflict with the Human Torch.

But once the war broke out and Hitler's presence began to threaten Atlantis, Namor and the Torch put their differences aside and helped form the Invaders. He served faithfully, helping the Allies win the war.

After World War II, Namor went into seclusion and developed amnesia. He was discovered in the early 1960s by the Fantastic Four and regained his memory (at least the part about hating surface dwellers). He often came into conflict with the Fantastic Four, but soon became less aggressive once he learned that not everyone on the surface world was evil. Namor's temper and arrogance have often made him seem like a threat, but his courage and nobility have shown that he truly is a hero.
