Alice Now and Zen Festival

To describe the Alice Now and Zen Festival as cool would not do it justice for the next to the last band that landed on the stage.

The Go Go's, Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Jane Wiedlin, and Kathy Valentine, showed up to the Alice stage ready to rock with their first song, the 1982 hit Vacation.  However, into the song, I noticed one glaring problem.  The sound stunk to high heaven.  Whoever was mixing the Go Go's set must have had a vendetta against the girls.  Belinda's vocals were hard to hear throughout the set, Charlotte's piano playing during the 1984 classic, Head Over Heels, faded in and out at times.  The audience did not seem to care and for the most part, I did not care because I was seeing the girls for a 3rd time this year.  Green Day's Billie Joe Thompson showed up once again to sing Jane Wiedlin's part on Our Lips Are Sealed which was the highlight for most of the audience that day.  The girls performed the 3 new songs, Apology, Kissing Asphalt, and Sonic Superslide as well as other Go Go's classics like We Got the Beat, which by the way had a new twist with the girls performing a small segment of the Blink 182 song, All the Small Things.  The energy and spunk that are Go Go's trademarks were certainly present.  The onstage banter was kept to a minimum due to the short set (approx. 40 minutes).   Out of the 3 concerts I went to, this one ranks #2 because of the Blink 182 improvisation.  The sound system did not do the Go Go's justice.  The Go Go's will continue the beat in Spring 2001 with the release of their new album in 17+ years.  Below are pictures from that concert event.
