Savatage never achieved the international accliam, but during their long career this progressive metal unit created some of the most challenging, intelligent, and entertaining music in the rock world. Despite a shifting lineup, and some unfavorable comparisons to everyone from Queensryche to Rush, the hard-edged style that Savatage brought to their music gave them a very distinctive sound.
Savatage Lineup at Olivia's death: Zachary Stevens-Vocals, Criss Oliva-Guitar, Wes Garren-Keyboards, Johnny Lee Middleton-Bass Guitar, Steve "Dr. Killdrums" Wacholz-Drums.
Criss Olivia was one of the greatest guitarists you never heard of. Criss' melodic wailing sound was a beauty to behold. Digging up some old Savatage just to listen to this progressive, artsy, and versatile musician is worth the effort.
Early in the morning on October 17th, 1993, Criss and his wife Dawn were traveling on U.S. 301 to attend the final day of an outdoor Livestock festival in Zephyr Hills, Florida - north of Tampa. A drunk driver was attempting to pass a semi-trailer in the oncoming traffic when it struck Oliva's car, killing Criss instantly and severely injuring Dawn. The drunk driver was convicted the following year of DUI manslaughter, sentenced to five years in prison and 10 years probation.
Criss' tombstone quotes "Believe" from Savatage's "Streets" album:
I'll be right there I'll never leave All I ask of you is believe.
