Woman--Which includes Man, of course

*Consider reversing the generic term Man. Think of the future of Woman, which, of course, includes both women and men. Feel into that, sense its meaning to you--as a woman--as a man.

*Think of it always being that way, every day of your life. Feel the everpresence of woman and feel the nonpresence of man. Absorb what it tells you about the importance and value of being woman--of being man.

*Recall that almost everything you have read all your life uses only female pronouns (she, her)--meaning both girls and boys, both women and men. Recall that most of the voices on the radio and most of the faces on TV are women's--particularly when important or serious events are being covered, particularly the voices of maturity, authority, wisdom. (Most of the men you do see on TV are young, physically attractive.)

*Remember that when you studied history in school, women were almost all of the important figures, the leaders those who shaped the world we live in. Women made the key discoveries and inventions; women were responsible for all of the important documents and concepts. The pictures in your history books and on your classroom walls were of women; the names and dates you memorized were women's. Women were the mothers of our country and founded the city of sisterly love. When the pioneers moved west, they took their husbands with them.

*Sense your conception of God. If your religious training and experience encourage you to dwell on an image of God in a human form, realize that you (and the works of religious aft in your church) have always imaged God in a woman's body. If you are a churchgoer, the priests, or the rabbis, or the ministers of your congregation--the human representative of spiritual authority--have always been women.

*Feel into the fact that women are the leaders, the power-centers, the prime movers. All of the Presidents have been women, all of the important political figures-almost all of the Supreme Court justices, the members of the Cabinet (with rare exceptions). Women make national and international policy. If you are a victim of crime, the police officer that responds is almost certainly a woman (or , sometimes, a very young man); if you are involved in some way in civil or criminal courts, almost all of the people you encounter--the lawyers, the judges, the figures of authority--are women. Most of the doctors you have seen in your lifetime have been women; all of the important medical authorities whose judgements are widely quoted and accepted are women. Almost all of your college teachers have been women.

*Women have always been in charge of the country's busimness and financial structure. Although there are small numbers of men in positions of importance, they are too few to influence crucial policies or decisions made at the highest level. Women, then, decide what will be made, what will be manufactured, what will be advertised and sold, where money will be invested. They control decisions about where industry will spend research and development money to create new products. Women in foundations and corporations decide what money will suport charities, and what charitable projects will receive funding. Women determine the priorities for medical and scientific research; women decide what problems will be investigated and what projects will be funded.

*Women control the majority of every legislative body in the country, and therefore determine the budgets and the budget priorities for all public spending. Women also control the press, the mass media, and the entire publishing industry, including the publishing of textbooks for all levels; although men may have some influence in some areas, women ultimately shape editorial policies, decide who will be hired, and determine what will be printed.

*Consider the obvious biological explanation for women as the ideal--her genital construction. By design, female genitals are compact and internal, protected by her body. Male genitals are so exposed that men must be protected from outside attack to assure the perpetuation of the race. His vulnerability clearly requires sheltering.

*Man, whose natural role is husband and father, fulfulls himself through nurturing children and making the home a refuge for women. This is only natural to balance the biological role of woman, who devotes her entire body to the race during pregnancy.
