I want to start off by explaining how I first came upon the
band Nine Inch Nails for that really is where we should start.
It was rather simple I was sitting in my old bedroom and had
105.1 WTOS (a Maine radio station) on. The song "Closer"
began to play and my brother Adam and I were hyptonized. After
the song concluded Adam and I talked on and on about how
much we liked it. So there my obssession began... I think I
was eleven.
For those of you who like to brag about how you like NIN since
they began... please don't visit Kris and my site. I only say
this because I have come across folks who brag to me about how
they knew about a certain band before everyone else and therefore
they think they are in some sort of hierarchy. I often wonder
if these people really like Nine Inch Nails or just the statement
it makes for them. I personally like a band because of the music
not the image liking that certain band will create for me.
Sorry people you did not need to hear that but I had to get it
out.
Anyways, after my first encounter with Nine Inch Nails, I began to
hear more of The Downward Spiral. I liked listening to "Piggy"
with headphones on. Eventually I got my own copy of The Downward
Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, and Broken. Although I have this
habit of losing and finding these albums over and over again.
While my best friend at the time was listening to Ace Of Base
and rap crap...I tried to encourage her to listen to NIN...
these attempts were in vain.
I had a growing fondness for the creator and man behind NIN,
Trent Reznor, after a few years of listening to Nine Inch Nails.
The thing about NIN is that you can hear a song a million times
and still find something new that you like about it. I
personally, never cared for Further Down The Spiral. But after
awhile some songs I grew to like. You can listen to one NIN song
and say "Well that is just bullshit...you can't even understand
what he's singing". Then if you take the time to really listen
you can identify with him and understand why he is singing that
particular song that way.
Some people wonder how anyone can listen to NIN... what Trent
Reznor has done with most of his records is bare his inner
emotions for the whole world to critize and that takes guts.
I admire him because of this not just his music. But for who
he is. He has taken his anger at the injustices served him and
turned it into an art of music that is ferious at times yet oddly
beautiful during others."I am not trying to just bitch, or
say that the world sucks,"Reznor told Plazm."I don't see any
point in doing that. But I am trying to come to terms with my
own head in a world that is chaotic and doesn't make sense. I'm
trying to deal with my own thoughts and recycle them into
something that I feel better about myself by
expressing....."
Sure some people still think NIN is shit
but to me this music...Nine Inch Nails... is the music with
meaning. Sure Trent will make an album to sell it but what it
really comes down to is what he likes as a musician...and as the
fans we can like it or not. Of course it would help Mr.Reznor's
income if we liked it alot and bought the albums.
