In the beginning, there was a band by the name of Le Mort Dieu, which consisted of Dennis Navratil, Dylan Kilgore, and Colin Shaw. Le Mort Dieu was an industrial band from Elko, Nevada that started in the summer of 1996, until their seperation in December. During their tenure together, they released an album titled "Convulsions" which consisted of a brutal and dark overtones combined with a hard, powerful guitar sound. Navratil, the head man of Le Mort Dieu, has continued recording as Le Mort Dieu alone, and has released the album "704Pilate" as well as two singles.
During their time in Le Mort Dieu, Dylan and Colin were experimenting with their punk and ska sounds, and kept practicing after the seperation. After working a few songs out, they were able to convince a friend by the name of Sunny Fugate to play bass for them. They took up the name of Megashifter around March of 1997 and practiced heavily with what they had until the two major performances of the band. Towards the end of the 1996-97 school year, they set up a performance at lunch at Elko High School. A few nights after the "Concert at the Eagle", they performed at the Senior Presentation Show (the presentation of all the best performances of all Seniors at the school for their parents and peers). After a grueling amount of working, a last performance was scheduled for July 28th, 1997 at Sunny's "Pad", a show of which Le Mort Dieu did the year before, but complications prevented it. After adding Clay Forsythe as a Rhythmic guitarist, the band had to break up to prepare for the upcoming year of school.
While Megashifter was in a stand-by in late March of 1997, Colin and Sunny decided to form a side-project with Clay to play a performance for the Elko Robotics Club. After two weeks of being unsuccessful in finding a name for the band, they agreed on "Screaming Silence" out of there being no objections to it. After a couple of practices, they played the show and made total fools out of themselves, throwing in Drew Forsythe at the last minute to play bass while Sunny would sing. After an embarassing first two songs, they called it quits for the night and packed up camp to let the other bands play.
Once the Megashifter Era ended, Clay, Colin, and Drew started practicing together in the last couple weeks before school started again. After getting a few songs together, the band had to be put off while Colin went to the University of Nevada, Reno, and Clay and Drew stayed behind at Elko High School. The band did not die out, however, as they practiced extensively during the Winter Break of 97-98, which gave them the inspiration to work harder and as often as possible. It was at this time that Clay suggested to change the name of the band to Screaming In Silence. After having to wait and practice individually, Colin came back to Elko for his Spring Break from March 13-21, of which they crammed an all night practice on the 13th for a performance on the 14th. The pressure of such strain would have been next to nothing, but during that time, Eric Moorehead and El Stevo were added into the mix as singers, Matt Rhiley and Russell Jones as the horn section, and Chip replacing Drew on Bass for the show.
The current sound of Screaming In Silence is a mix of hardcore, three-way, and East Coast punk with a twist of Death Metal in a couple songs. Their hit song, "Preppy", has sparked a recent cry for more ska in the Elko scene, while "Damn the Man" brings out the New York punk rocker in us all in the chant of the chorus, which is the same as the song title.
Ahead of the band are another couple of shows planned in Elko, as well as the recording of an album on cd. The planned release of the album is sometime in late May to early June on Somfuksik Records. The band will also be moving out of the Elko scene shortly due to Clay's going to the University of Nevada, Reno next Fall. This could cause the ska aspect of Screaming In Silence to fall apart, though only time will tell.
