An End is the Beginning Chapter 4

Kaylee opened the dusty box and backed away as a cockroach scuttled out. She had her sandals ready. "Splat." She made a face at the large brown mess on the floor.

At the top of the box was heaps of sheets of paper. Kaylee looked closer. "Music?" She set the music aside and pulled out a CD.

"Zodiac? Looking All Around?" she turned the CD over and her eyes widened. A picture of her mother and Aunt Jamie along with Aunt Jessie smiled from the back.

"I thought Aunt Jamie was having me on when she said she was in a big group." she opened the CD, pulled out the leaflet. She opened it, and saw 3 bright faced girls.

Auntie Jamie was pudgy, and had a huge smile on her face. Her smile still looked the same after all these years.

Auntie Jessica was very pretty. Her long blonde hair and violet eyes stood out as she laughed at the camera. "Too bad I never got to know her." She had died when she was only 16. A car crash. Aunt Jamie had never been the same, and she refused to talk about Kaylee's aunt.

Kaylee sighed. Her eyes were drawn to the 3rd girl. The girl stared, amost glared up from the glossy paper. "Mum." Kaylee said, tracing her fingers over her mother's young face.

"She was as old as you are now." came a voice from the doorway.

Kaylee's head snapped around. "Yeah?"

Jamie nodded and came in, sitting down on the floor. "Yep. Only 15."

"Don't sit on the roach." Kaylee warned too late.

Jamie jumped up to find the roach only a foot away from where she was sitting. She sat back down further away.

Kaylee looked again at the young girl. She could be the girl next door, or a school friend. Not her mother.

Jamie looked over her niece's shoulder. "You look alot like her." Her voice was tinted with sadness.

Kaylee grinned. "Do I?"

Jamie smiled and nodded. "It doesn't look it, does it? She dyed her hair red, for one. It was brown, like yours. Yours is a bit lighter, though."

Kaylee looked harder at the girl. "And I've got her mouth."

Jamie laughed. "Yeah. A big one."

Kaylee laughed and made as if to choke her aunt.

Jamie backed off, chuckling. "She had the wildest sense of humor, and she wasn't afraid to say what she wanted."

"Cool." Kaylee set the CD down and pulled out a photo album. She flicked through and saw pictures of the music group and separate ones.

She came to a page with a magazine clipping. Her mother stood next to someone else.

"Who's that?" Kaylee asked, pointing to the person next to the girl.

Jamie put the CD down. "That's..." she smiled slightly, her eyes focusing on something only she could remember. "That's an old friend of hers."

Kaylee bent closer and examined the picture closer. "But I don't have her eyes. Hers are green."

Jamie nodded thoughtfully. "Yes... you must have your father's eyes."

Kaylee looked up, and Jamie glanced at her niece's bright blue eyes, deep in thought. She suddenly snapped into it. Joseph Cooke has blue eyes, but not that blue... There was only one person Jamie could think of who had eyes like that... it had never hit home why the brilliant color of her eyes were so familiar... The same color that caught the hearts of young girls all across the globe long ago... the same color that stops someone in their tracks in surprise.

Kaylee looked back down at the picture, biting her lips.

Goosebumps rose on Jamie's body as her niece's profile looked like some hazy reminder of someone else's from the past...

She grabbed the photo album and flicked through, and finally found a color photo. She held it up and studied Kaylee's confused face. There was the same strong chin and nose and dark eyebrows. The one thing that really stood out, however, was the amazing likeness of the bright blue eyes between Taylor Hanson and Kay Lee Harmont.
