I flopped down, leaned sideways, and peeled the magazine stuck on my bum off. "Anything on the telly?" I asked aloud, as if the magazine would tell me.
Jamie chucked the remote at me. "Shut up."
"You." I answered good naturedly. I flicked through the channels, and sighed. "I'm bored."
"So'm I." Jamie said.
Jessica looked up from painting her nails. "Get lost then." she made a face.
"I know when I'm not wanted." I got up.
"Don't leave me with this wedgie." Jamie got up, ignoring the withering glare from Jess.
We walked out of the hotel room and out into the large hall.
"I know. We'll go shopping." I made a face. "God, I hate shopping, but I promised you."
Jamie squirmed excitedly. "Really?!"
"Yeah. Let's find a driver." I barged into the boys' room.
Zac jumped, spraying potato chips everywhere. "What the he-!" he cursed in surprise, and looked shame facedly at his father.
Walker Hanson gave his son a stern look.
"Sorry for barging in here, but we'd like to go out shopping. We need transport. Got any ideas?" I asked him.
"You can catch a taxi, but I don't want you doing that. I can arrange a driver for you."
I nodded. "Thank you."
Later in the hired car, me and Jamie piled in.
Zac raced up.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Dad says that I'm being sour, so I have to come." he groaned. Jamie sank into her seat, muttering "Great."
"Sure, get on in, Zacca." I told him, and climbed over to the front seat. The driver stared. I wrinkled my nose at him, and he got the idea.
"Where to?" he asked.
"Somewhere with clothes." I said helpfully.
He muttered inaudibly and started on the car.
Somehow, we ended up in the flashiest stores in New York. We cleared out every store I ever imagined, all with funky names and HUGE price tags. I mean these things were like scrolls, the prices were so large.
Lastly, with bags and crap all around us, our driver pulled up in front of Chanel's.
I groaned. "Jamie, you are such a spender!"
She grinned, and burrowed into her new dress. "C'mon!" and pulled me out of the car.
Zac followed, sighing. I felt like a dag stuck to the heel of a diamond studded shoe at a posh establishment. I was so out of place. I scuffed my grimy sneakers and they squeaked loudly. Snobby women turned and stared at me.
Here we go again. I rolled my eyes.
"Excuse me, but are you in the right place?" asked one women.
I mean, this was a scene right out of Pretty Woman. Except I looked like one of those beggars they chased off the set, not a prostitute.
"Oh yes." I put on a Pommy accent. "Really?" the woman asked doubtfully. Jamie linked arms with me. "Yes she is. Now glam her up." she ordered, taking on the roll of boss.
The woman looked at Jamie and smelled money. She went right to it.
I was snatched away to see this and that. After yonks of different suits, I settled on some black slacks, a black jacket and black high heel shoes.
"Damn, Kris!" Jamie whistled, eyeing me from head to toe.
"I feel preppy." I complained.
"We've got to get you a dress for the dinner..." Jamie mumbled and fingered some dresses.
"What?!" I shrieked and spun in my heels. I nearly fell over, and I grabbed out. I took my hand away from the mannican's breast as fast as away from a hot pan. I colored.
Jamie paused. "You didn't know we were going to a dinner?"
"I have dinner every night, so why do I feel cornered here?" My face was screwed up.
Jamie sighed, and pulled a black dress from the rack. "Hanson has a charity dinner to go to. We're invited." She eyed it and held it up for me to see.
"Hang on. A 'charity dinner' sounds like a big brass band, classy clothes and champagne! Not like Hanson." I wrinkled my nose at the dress.
"They're not performing. They're just showing up and donating some money." she put the dress back.
"That's retarded." I finally said, and shook my head at the ugly satin dress she held up. "No way in hell am I wearing a dress!"
Later, Jamie beamed as I turned in the mirror, eyeing my reflection.
"Guess what?" I sighed.
"What?"
"I'm in a dress."
Jamie laughed, and went to find Zac, telling the saleswoman not to let me change until Zac had seen.
I stared at my reflection. Gone was the torn silverchair shirt, torn jeans and grimy sneakers. I wore high black suede shoes, and a black and white dress.
"I look kinda cool." I admitted to my reflection.
"Jewelry?" the woman asked.
I was about to refuse, but that evil glimmer of glamor had hit me. "Yeah. Show me what ya got."
I ended up with a silver chain, bracelet and earrings.
"You look marvelous." the woman dripped.
Keep sucking up, lady.
"Thank you." I turned to find Zac staring.
"Whoa, man, Taylor will be instantly happy to see you in that!" he grinned.
I laughed. "I won't go farther than that."
A slight cough came from behind me.
"We'll take it all." I said, ignoring the 3 figure price tag, and went back to change.
