CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE

Zac walked in. "Green Jello." he greeted softly.

I said nothing, not looking at him. I kept my vision fixed on the many boquets of flowers in my room. Nevertheless, I began crying again, and the bright colors ran into one another.

"How are you, Kris?" Zac asked, sitting on the edge of the bed and my vision.

I wiped my face.

He sat for a minute. "Jamie's awake."

I nodded.

"You can see her." he shifted. "Kris?"

I glanced at him, my eyes blurred.

"Your dad's here, as well."

I pulled myself off the bed, managed to get into my chair and wheeled to the elevator. ICU was a floor down.

I came out of the elevator, and found the room. I wheeled in slowly and stopped. Jamie was hooked up to all sorts of machines. They looked like huge monsters draining her life away; not holding her by the merest thread.

She had a tube down her throat and one up her nose. She had many IV's and had a large bandage around her head. Her arm was in a cast and she had a bandage around her chest. Her head was shaved, and her neck was wrapped with a brace.

"Broken collar bone, 4 ribs, right arm and a fractured skull. Damage to her neck. Punctured lung." a nurse recited in a monotone for me. "Frankly, I think she's lucky to be alive."

I nodded, biting my lip to keep the pain away. She looked so small and pale. Like she would break at the slightly disturbance.

The nurse patted me on the shoulder and walked out. I wheeled over to Jamie's bed and gently grasped her left hand.

"I've watched enough telly to know that people hear you when they're out of it. So Jamie, how are you?" I began cheerily, but it didn't work.

Her eyes fluttered and I watched her face carefully. She slowly pulled her hand from my grasp and turned her head slightly away.

I bowed my head and nodded slightly. I grasped the wheels and wheeled out of the room and back to my own to be alone.
