This page has some scales, modes, warm-ups and chords all thrown in to one...If you have some tabs then please send it to me...

Well lets start off with an A pentatonic scale...this is one of the most commonly used scales for improvising and its kind of base for your other scales so practise it a lot...
/-------------------------------------------5----8-----------/
/-----------------------------------5----8-------------------/
/---------------------------5----7---------------------------/
/-------------------5----7-----------------------------------/
/-----------5----7-------------------------------------------/
/--5----8----------------------------------------------------/

The pentatonic has many different variations such as this one:
/---------------------------------------------5----8---------/
/-------------------------------------5----8-----------------/
/----------------------------5--6--7-------------------------/
/-------------------5--6--7----------------------------------/
/----------5--6--7-------------------------------------------/
/--5----8----------------------------------------------------/

The next scale is an A Blues Scale, its also great for improvising...
/--------------------------------------------5-----8---------/
/------------------------------------5----8------------------/
/---------------------------5--7--8--------------------------/
/-------------------5----7-----------------------------------/
/----------5--6--7-------------------------------------------/
/--5----8----------------------------------------------------/

OK, this is an A Major Blues Scale
/-------------------------------------------------------5--7--8-/
/----------------------------------------------5--7--8----------/
/--------------------------------4--5--6--7--8------------------/
/-----------------------4--5--7---------------------------------/
/-----------4--5--6--7------------------------------------------/
/--5--7--8------------------------------------------------------/

Now for the Minor Blues Scale -
/--------------------------------------------------5--7--8------/
/-----------------------------------------5--6--8---------------/
/-----------------------------4--5--7--8------------------------/
/-----------------------5--7------------------------------------/
/-----------5--6--7--8------------------------------------------/
/--5--7--8------------------------------------------------------/

Minor Modes: modes are series of related scales - the following seven modes contain the same notes as a C major scale they are:

  • C Lonian
  • D Dorian
  • E Phrygian
  • F Lydian
  • G Mixolydian
  • A Aelonian ( or natural minor )
  • B Locrian

This is caled the C major family of modes...

This is an A Aelonian:
/--------------------------------------------5--7--8-----/
/-----------------------------------5--6--8--------------/
/--------------------------4--5--7-----------------------/
/--------------------5--7--9-----------------------------/
/-----------5--7--8--------------------------------------/
/--5--7--8-----------------------------------------------/

The next one is a D Dorian:
/----------------------------------------------------------10--12--13-/
/----------------------------------------------10--12--13-------------/
/-----------------------------------9--10--12-------------------------/
/-----------------------9--10--12--14---------------------------------/
/--------------10--12--14---------------------------------------------/
/--10--12--13---------------------------------------------------------/

Well..this one is the E Phrygian...
/----------------------------------------------------------12--13--15-/
/----------------------------------------------12--13--15-------------/
/--------------------------------------12--14-------------------------/
/--------------------------12--14--15---------------------------------/
/--------------12--14--15---------------------------------------------/
/--12--13--15---------------------------------------------------------/

Major Modes: The major modes all make use of the out-of-position notes - each mode encompasses five ( rather than four frets ) and they all make use of the big strech...
The first major mode is...mmmm...the C Ionian:
/------------------------------------------------------8--10--12------/
/----------------------------------------------10--12-----------------/
/-----------------------------------9--10--12-------------------------/
/------------------------9--10--12------------------------------------/
/-------------8--10--12-----------------------------------------------/
/--8--10--12----------------------------------------------------------/

Next up is the G Mixolydian...
/--------------------------------------------3--5--7---/
/--------------------------------------5--6------------/
/-----------------------------4--5--7------------------/
/--------------------3--5--7---------------------------/
/-----------3--5--7------------------------------------/
/--3--5--7---------------------------------------------/

This is the F Lydian Mode:
/--------------------------------------------1--3--5---/
/--------------------------------------3--5------------/
/-----------------------------2--4--5------------------/
/--------------------2--3--5---------------------------/
/-----------2--3--5------------------------------------/
/--1--3--5---------------------------------------------/

The next one is the B Locrian Mode:
/-------------------------------------------------7--8--10--/
/------------------------------------------8--10------------/
/--------------------------------7--9--10-------------------/
/----------------------7--9--10-----------------------------/
/------------7--8--10---------------------------------------/
/--7--8--10-------------------------------------------------/

Well thats all for the modes...but here are a few scales and warm-up exercises:
Here is a basic Major C scale:
/----------------------------------------------7--8---------/
/---------------------------------------8--10---------------/
/-----------------------------7--9--10----------------------/
/-------------------7--9--10--------------------------------/
/---------7--8--10------------------------------------------/
/--8--10----------------------------------------------------/

Here is another way to play it:
/----------------------------------------------------------10--12--13--/
/----------------------------------------------10--12--13--------------/
/-----------------------------------9--10--12--------------------------/
/------------------------9--10--12-------------------------------------/
/-------------8--10--12------------------------------------------------/
/--8--10--12-----------------------------------------------------------/

Well...here is a Major Minor C scale.
/---------------------------------------------------8----/
/-----------------------------------------8--9--11-------/
/-------------------------------7--8--10-----------------/
/------------------------8--10---------------------------/
/-------------8--10--11----------------------------------/
/--8--10--11---------------------------------------------/

When the next note lies right below roll your finger, don't lift your finger
off the string but always make sure to mute the first note.

Gmajor scale ascending in fours (pattern)
This is a good way to connect scales, you can incorporate slides, hammer-
ons and pull-offs.

|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
|----------------------------------------------2--------2--4-----2--4--5---
|----------2--------2--3-----2--3--5--2--3--5-----3--5--------5------------
|-2--3--5-----3--5--------5------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------2----
----------------------------------------------3--------3--5-----3--5-------
-----------2--------2--4----2--4--5--2--4--5-----4--5--------5-------------
---2--4--5----4--5--------5------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------2--3-----2--3--5---|
--3--5--------5------------|
---------------------------| then descend
---------------------------| do this for all 5 positions
---------------------------|

Gmajor scale in 4ths (intervals)

|--------------------------------------------------------------------2-----
|--------------------------------------------------------3-----5-------3---
|---------------------------------------2----4-----5--2-----4-----5--------
|----------------------2-----4----5--2----4-----5--------------------------
|----2-----3-----5--2-----3-----5------------------------------------------
|-2-----3-----5------------------------------------------------------------

--2----5---|
----3------|
-----------|then descend
-----------| do this for all 5 positions
-----------|
-----------|

Here's a cool little (interval) 4th pattern, sounds good when you play
it fast. The first two notes (4th interval) go forward, the next two
go backward.
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|----------------------------------------2--4-----------------------------|
|-------------------2--------4--5-----2--------4--etc---------------------|
|----2--3--------5-----2--3--------5--------------------------------------|
|-2--------3--5-----------------------------------------------------------|

here's a strange little lick that I came up with

|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-/5-3-4------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------5--4--------2-----------------------------------------------|
|----------5--------4--2-----5--------4--2--------------------------------|
|-------------------------------5--3--------2~----------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Arpeggios Major
Keep playing this up to the 12th fret then descend down.
Try using sweep picking as well as alternate picking, it's good for your
right hand dexterity.

|-------------2--3--------------------------------------------------------|
|----------3--------4-----------------------------------------------------|
|-------2--------------3--------------------------------------------------|
|----4--------------------5-----------------------------------------------|
|-5--------------------------6etc-----------------------------------------|

or
|--------------------------------------|----------------------------------|
|--------------------------------------|----------------------------------|
|--------------------------------------|----------------------------------|
|-----------2--------------------3etc--|---------2--3---------------------|
|--------3-----3--------------4--------|------3--------4------------------|
|--1--5-----------5--1--2--6-----------|1--5--------------6--2------------|

or
|------------------------------------|------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------|------------------------------------|
|------------4--------------------5--|----------4--5----------------------|
|-----1---4-----4--1--------2--5-----|----1--4--------5--2----------------|
|--2------------------2--3-----------|-2--------------------3-------------|
