ASIA
REUNION
Jose Manuel Medina
22-1-99
Well, I am seeing
all people talk about the ASIA reunion. I have seen different
thoughts about it. Some people think that it is a wrong idea
and some other people, by the other hand, think that it is the
best thing that could happened to ASIA since John Wetton left the
band in 1991.
In my opinion, they will be good in all ways. Yes... I think if
they joined again, they will do a very good CD, and if they
continue like now, they will
do a very good work too. Nevertheless I am seeing a new fashion
of get reunited old bands. For example, not too many years ago,
Eagles were
reunited. Toto is recording a CD with Bobby Kimball, the first
singer of the band, so, they are together again. All of this
sounds like if money
were the reason to do that, cause in this type of CD's the bands
get more sucess cause new fans buy it, and the older too. But it
doesn't matter,
I know ASIA will do a new great CD with or without Wetton. And if
John Wetton record with them (and Carl Palmer too), it will be a
pleasure
for me listen to them again in ASIA. The only thing I don't want
to lose in ASIA is John Payne, he is a great singer (bassist
too), and he gave ASIA
a great sound. I know so many people like more John Wetton
playing bass, but I have to say that John Payne have very good
bass lines, for
example in DESIRE, a song with two different bass lines (amazing
lines of bass, very good). Good, it is all at this moment.
ASIA POLL
Jose Manuel Medina
10-11-98
I want to say thank
you to all the people who participated in the ASIA poll. At the
moment we can say that John Wetton and the first chapter
of ASIA are the winners. The Asia Fans tastes tells that ALPHA
and ASIA are the best albums of the band. But if we take the
total score,
we will see that all the ASIA studio albums (except ASTRA) are
the most liked by the fans. Taking the total score too, we can
see the people
have more studio albums than live albums or compilations. I'm
very grateful to Dave Gallant for his help.
WETTON vs
PAYNE
Jose Manuel Medina
20-8-98
Reading to the
Armada in the last issues, I always found several letters
speaking about John Wetton and John Payne.
Many people think that John Wetton is the genuine sound for the
vocals on Asia, and other people found John Payne more suitable
in that part of the band. I have to say that I prefer John Payne
for ASIA... with Geoff Downes. However, I find the solo work of
John Wetton
very good. I think he sound so much better than with ASIA. I know
that many of the fans of ASIA that follow them since 80's, see
Wetton the only
voice for ASIA, and I understand it. I suppose that Beatles fans
don't want someone to replace John Lennon. But for me,
fortunately,
John Wetton continue his works... and ASIA is still making music.
I mean that I understand John Payne era like a second chapter of
the band.
John Wetton is a great musician, and he was in a huge number of
bands... but never was a lot of time in none of them, so, his
work is very
rich and diverse. But on the other hand, I love ASIA sound since
1992. I followed first Wetton era, and I liked it so much. But
when I listen to
Aqua, all the things changed for me. ASIA first sound was too
uniform... making always same patterns (except new songs of Then
& Now).
Aqua has a different sound... deep... majestic... strong... and
quiet at the same time.
Both Asia chapters are very good, and JW solo career too, so, I
hope all the old Asia fans will be able to love both chapters one
day...
