Chapter One

~ May 6, 1988 ~

It was two weeks before the senior prom and Julia was still without a date. She was too nervous and shy to ask anyone out. Confidence was something she lacked... lost that day 2 years ago. She shook her head and came back to reality. She wasn't that girl anymore, naive and weak. She knew it... believed it...

Grabbing her books from her locker she headed towards her homeroom. Before she got there she stopped and took a drink from the water fountain. While she was there she overheard two girls in her grade talking about the prom.

"I can't believe the prom is two weeks away."

"I know, did you hear that Kevin didn't ask anyone yet?"

"Really?"

The bell for homeroom sounded and the conversation ended there. Julia decided to take a chance and ask Kevin to the prom. So during her lunch she went up to his table and got enough courage to ask.

"You want me to go to the prom with you?" He laughed and shunned her away while his friends laughed along with him. She left the lunch room and went into the bathroom. She didn't cry, she wouldn't cry. It was just the prom... right? Just the prom...

Kim Ann got accepted to Florida State University and was in her freshman year. Though she was barely there for a month she felt right at home. She lay in her bed reading a book when there was a knock on her dorm room door.

"It's open" she said, not looking away from her book.

"Hey, what are you reading?"

"Oh, just something I picked up" she said getting up and throwing the book onto her dresser.

"You ready to go?" Julia asked.

"Yeah, just let me get my shoes," Kim Ann answered. Kim Ann and Julia were best friends even though Julia was a year ahead of her in college. They loved each others company and understood each other better than anyone else they knew. Right before they were about to leave, the phone rang in Kim Ann's room.

"Hello?" she said into the receiver.

"Hey Kymmi, it's Howie, what time did you say the movie was?"

"In an hour, but Julia and I are leaving now cause we need to get some cash from the bank."

"Alright, I'll see you then," Howie said and hung up. Kymmi had known Howie since they were 16 years old when she moved to Florida. He was the closest guy friend she ever had. She introduced Julia to Howie a couple of weeks ago and from then on the three of them had become best friends.

Jana was getting ready to go bowling with her best friend Piper. There was a three year age difference between them, Piper being 16 and Jana 13, but somehow they clicked. They grew up right by each other, the same neighborhood actually, but hadn't known it 'till a few years back when they met each other at a mutual friend's party.

Jana got ready just in time. The horn of the car went off outside and she grabbed her keys and left. Ten minutes later they arrived at the bowling alley.

"Nice driving," Jana said sarcastically.

"Shut up, I've only had my permit for a couple of weeks," Piper shot back laughing. Piper was the kind of person who, when you talked with for a couple of minutes, you felt like you've known your entire life. She was a jokester. Loved to pull pranks, have pranks pulled on her, she just loved to laugh... and this gave her a great sense of humor. A humor she had lost a few weeks back but regained when things started to get a little better. Jana loved Piper's humor. It made her forget about things on her mind. This was one of the reasons they got along so well.

The other reason had brought them together in a way they both wished it had not. Piper, losing something that was precious to her, and Jana finding something she never wanted. The game ended within an hour, Piper being the winner.

"You cheated! You were actually GOOD!!" Jana said teasingly. Piper smiled but didn't say anything. A few moments later Piper spoke, "Hey, wanna get together this weekend and do something?"

"I can't, I'm going to Jordan's party," Jana replied.

"Oh yea, what's it for again?" Piper asked.

"I'm not sure, she said something about Nick leaving school or something..."

Jordan was getting everything ready for her going away party that she was throwing for her best friend Nick. She still couldn't believe that someone SHE knew was leaving school cause he was in a music group. She supported him all the way. She wanted Nick to be happy and nothing more. And this, made him happy. Nick gave her the one thing she wanted her whole life... someone to care for her. Someone who wanted to be with her, and spend time with her. Even though they were just best friends... to Jordan, Nick was more. He was someone who gave her a strength to go on. Not give up. Never give up...

As Jordan placed the cups down on the table the doorbell rang instantaneously. About a half hour later evryone who was invited was at the party.

"Thank you for throwing me this party... I'll never forget it" Nick said giving Jordan a hug.

"You're welcome... just promise me one thing," she said pulling away.

"Anything..."

"Don't forget about me.." she said smiling faintly.

"How can I ever forget you?" Nick said giving her a comforting smile. Jordan walked over to the drinks and poured herself some lemonade.

"Hey Jordan," Jana said sipping some of her drink.

"Jana, hey... I didn't see you standing there."

"So I was sitting on the couch thinking, when i realized... I've never even seen Nick in person." Jordan was a year younger than Jana. Whenever Jana was over Jordan's house she'd call up Nick cause she wanted her two best friends to get to know each other. Over a period of a year Jana had numerous telephone conversations with Nick but never met him. The thought never even crossed anyone of their minds. Nick and Jana had become accustomed to each other as "the girl on the phone" or "the guy on the phone." Besides for Nick, the only other person who Jordan felt cared about her was Jana. She loved both of them... and their love for her made her stronger everyday.

"Come on, I'll introduce you," Jordan said pulling Jana's arm. Jordan found Nick in the middle of a clutter of people.

"Nick, I'd like you to meet someone... this is "the girl on the phone","Jordan said smiling.

"Nice to finally meet you Jana," Nick said smiling wryly knowing that Jordan was making fun of him.

"Same here Nick... so you're leaving school to join a band?" Jana asked.

"Yea, we're called Backstreet Boys... after the market here in Orlando."

"Cool, who knows... maybe you'll make it big one day..."
