Jack Drag opened the show. What I really like about this trio from Boston is that the drummer doesn't just fade into the background. He does more than just keep the beat -- he beats out incredible, forceful rhythms that make the songs come to life. He's a treat to watch.
Tonight was the first Ottawa appearance of the new Starling (with Danny Michel replacing Jon Reilly-Roe). They were decked out in suits and ties and I had horrible visions of Ian slaving away at some mundane 9-to-5 office job... Anyway, having seen the guys play together as Danny Michel and The Wedding Band, I was already accustomed to the dynamics of the new trio, but I was curious to see what Danny would bring to Starling. I find he brings fun and freshness and a sense of balance -- before, it was like Ian LeFeuvre alone was Starling, whereas now Starling is more equally shared among the three.
There was a good balance of familiar Starling tunes including Homely, If I Could Do, and Delusional, with some new material that I hope will appear on the up-and-coming new Starling CD. Danny also stole the spotlight a few times, playing some of his own songs with Ian and Peter putting on their Wedding Band hats.
Pics will be up whenever they get developed.
