Blue Hawaii was by far Elvis' most successful album
spending 20 weeks at the top of the charts, twice as long as his second
biggest album, G.I. Blues. Obviously, it would make sense that this
is one of his most popular albums, but that does not mean that it is his
best. Although any album which contains a song like "Can't Help Falling
In Love" can't be all bad, one song does not an album make. That
also doesn't mean that it's the only good song, because it isn't.
"Ku-U-I-Po", "Hawaiian Wedding Song" and the title track are all very pretty
songs, and there are a couple others as well, but the album does have one
serious flaw. It suffers from an overt cuteness, which is becuase
the songs were not written to match Elvis or even for Elvis, but for the
movie. For instance "Rock-A-Hula Baby" was a big hit because it was
Elvis, but didn't anyone see that it was a pretty stupid song ? Rock-A-Hula
!?!? And "Ito Eats" about a character in the film with a large appetite.
Wow, that's deep. This is not Elvis' best material by far, but some
of the songs really did fit him. Maybe part of it was luck in this
film. Later attempts were not as lucky.
