This timeline takes you from Elvis' birth in 1935 through to his signing with RCA in 1955. When you're doen with this timeline, go back and check out the next part !!

January 8, 1935-  Elvis Aron Presley born to Gladys and Vernon Presley in Tupelo Mississippi.  He was the second born of identical twins.  His brother Jesse Garon was stillborn and was burried in an unmarked grave.

May 25, 1938-  Vernon Presley along with two other men is sentanced to three years in jail for forging a four dollar cheque.  He is released on February 6, 1939.

Sept. 1941-  Elvis starts school.

Jan. 8 1946-  Elvis recieves his first guitar as a birthday present from his parents.  He wanted a bicycle instead.

Sept. 12, 1948-  Vernon moves the family from Tupelo to Memphis in hopes of a better life.

Sept. 1949-  Elvis enters Humes High School.

June 1951-  Elvis' first job. He works at Precision Tools making artillery shells for the army.

June 3, 1953-  Elvis graduates from Humes High School.

July 18, 1953-  Elvis goes to the Memphis Recording Service, owned by Sam Phillips and records two songs for four dollars as a birthday present to his mother. He accompanys himself on guitar playing "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begins".

Jan. 4, 1954 - Elvis cuts two more tracks for at the Sun Studio.

July 5, 1954-  History is made when Elvis Presley along with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black record several songs at Sun. Initialy the session goes poorly.  Only when Elvis starts to play "That's All Right" during a break and Scotty and Bill join in does Sam Phillips realize what he has.

July 7, 1954- Memphis D.J. Dewey Phillips plays first plays "That's All Right". It is so heavily requested that he goes on to play it 14 times.

July 12, 1954-  Elvis and his parents sign a managerial contract with guitaris Scotty Moore.

July 17, 1954-  Elvis' first gig at the Bon Air Club in Memphis.

July 28 1954-  Elvis' first paper interview.

October 2, 1954-  Elvis makes his only appearence at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.  The audience did not appreciate his renditions of country satndards and the talent director there even said that Elvis should go back to driving a truck !

October 16 1954-  Makes his first appearance on The Louisiana Hayride Radio Program, which was broadcast from Shreveport.

Jan. 1, 1955-  Signs with manager Bob Neal.

Feb. 6, 1955-  First meets his future manager Col. Tom Parker.

March 5, 1955-  Makes his television debut on The Louisiana Hayride television program.

March 1955-  Auditions for Arthur Godfrey's "Talent Scout" , a New York TV program.  He didn't get the job.

August 15, 1955-  Signs a contract with Col. Tom Parker, although still under contract with Bob Neal.

Nov. 20, 1955-  RCA purchases Elvis' contract from Sam Phillips for a then unheard of $35,000.
