My Story: The Backstreet Boys Concert
~ Saturday, August 22, 1998 ~
- Molson Amphitheatre - Toronto - 8:00pm -

My friends and I went to the second sold out show at the Molson Amphitheatre on Saturday, August 22nd, 1998. For most of us, it was our first concert….EVER! There were two screens set up on both sides of the stage. The Molson Amphitheatre isn’t that big, so even if you had lawn seats, and sat at the back, (I think) you still had a fairly good view. Well, WE had good seats, though. We were surprised at how close we were. 200 level. (It wasn’t that close, but we expected to be farther.)

The opening acts for this show were Solid HarmoniE and Aaron Carter. I

don’t know what the songs that Solid HarmoniE sang were called, but Aaron Carter sang "Crush On You", "Shake it", and "Crazy Little Party Girl." SO CUTE! After Aaron sang, we waited a while before the Backstreet Boys actually went on stage. They played classic rock songs while we waited. Before they came on, some guy went on stage and had to break some bad news to us; A.J. wasn’t gonna be performing. This really didn’t come as a shock to us ‘cause we bumped into other friends earlier that went to the first (sold out) show and they said that A.J. hurt his leg during the first show and wasn’t there for the last three songs. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital ‘cause he tore some ligaments in his leg. Sure, it wasn’t much of a shock, but it was, however, a BIG disappointment.

They opened the show with "That’s The Way I Like It". Since it was Howie’s birthday, they brought out a birthday cake and we sang Happy Birthday to him. The concert continued with dancing to music that was done by other artists to get the audience all hyped up. It was like a remix of Notorious B.I.G. song and other people. Nick took off his shirt! (Well, sorta…he was wearing a tank top underneath.) They then sang "Hey Mr. D.J." During he end of that song, Howie mysteriously went missing!!!

After, each member sang a song solo. First, Howie came out with roses and sang "My Heart Stays With You." (So that’s where he went!) As he was singing, he threw out the flowers to the audience. Next was Brian. He sat centre stage with a guitar showing his amazing guitar skills and sang "That’s What She Said" accompanied by another guitarist sitting beside him. Kevin sang "Nobody But You" next. He sounded really good as he was movin’ around ‘n dancin’. Finally, Nick sang "Heaven In Your Eyes." He didn’t sing the entire thing though. At the end, he held this note for the longest time. It was amazing! After that, they stopped with the slow stuff and sang "Let’s Have A Party." Next was "Darlin’".

They performed "All I Have to Give" next and did their little hat dance that you see in the video.

When doing "Quit Playing Games" (which was the next song) their band "screwed up" twice, so the Backstreet Boys had to show ‘em how it was done. Each member played a different instrument. Nick on the drums, Brian on the bongos, Howie on lead guitar, and Kevin on the keyboard. A.J. was supposed to play the bass, but obviously couldn’t. The band came back a little later and continued with the rest of the song while the guys danced and sang. They then sang "Anywhere for You."

During "I’ll Never Break Your Heart" somebody threw something at Howie, and Nick grabbed it from him and started laughing. Then Nick realized he had to sing again. After he sang that little bit, he stuffed the thing that someone threw at Howie in his pocket.

Also, during another song, someone threw a brown Beenie baby dog on the stage and Nick put it to his cheek and pretended it was attacking him! He even fell to the floor! It was so funny! And someone else threw a Donald Duck at Brian earlier in the show, and he picked it up, showed it to the audience and made an adorable Donald Duck sound!

While performing another song, I noticed Howie had picked up some little blond haired boy and started dancing with him by swaying him from side to side. They looked so sweet together.

The song following "I’ll Never Break Your Heart" was "As Long As You Love Me." They did their famous chair dance. It was cool.

They then sang what started out as "Get Down", and mixed the end of that song with the beginning of "We’ve Got It Goin’ On", and sang that.

For their finale, they ended the show with "Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)". They played the beginning and the end of the video on the screens. When A.J.’s part in the video came on (y’know "Yo guys I had this trippin’ dream last night…") everyone was screaming! A.J. was missed by everyone. *sniff* During Nick’s "Am I sexual?" part, he lowered his pants a little at the front (you could see his underwear!) and moved his hips in a circle! (AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!)

The whole Backstreet Boy performance lasted around 1½ hours. It would’ve been a bit longer if A.J. were there. I think his solo song was supposed to be "Lay Down Beside Me". Well, since A.J. wasn’t there, *sniff* his parts were either given to Brian or Kevin. Even though he wasn’t a part of it, the rest of the guys still managed to make my first ever concert

A WHOLE LOTTA FUN! (and so did my friend’s binoculars!)

THANX GUYS!

Also, thanx to Lindsay for remembering the order of the songs and for her binoculars.

Did ya see a concert? How was it? Tell me about it, and I'll post it up here!
