Rosie O'Donnell Show Rosie: Back with Darren Hayes of Savage Garden, they've got a new album out today, but before we get to that, thankyou for singing on my Christmas album! Darren: you know i loved doing it for two reason, it was for a Children's charity which i think is an amazing cause, and Elmo was on it! I had to be on a record with Elmo! Rosie: Exactly! (they laugh) It's a beautiful song you sang, um George Michael originally sang it. Darren: yeah, i think George michael is an amazing singer (someone claps) Yeah he really is an amazing singer! Rosie: You remind me of him in vocal quality. Darren: Yeah, well that's a great compliment cause he really is a great vocalist. Rosie: Have u met him? Darren: You know i haven't met him, and i hope he likes this song, cause um...maybe he wont want to meet me (they laugh). Darren: I think i did him justice. Rosie: I think you did too, it sounds very very nice! Darren: thanks! Rosie: And you're also going to be appearing on my Christmas special on December 5th. Darren: Yeah, i'm doing it! Rosie: You're doing it? Darren: I'm doing it! Rosie: There you go Darren! thankyou very much. (they give each other high-fives) Rosie: Now you and Daniel, this is your 2nd C.D. here in the states, or did you have other C.D.'s in Australia? Darren: this is it, this is the 2nd album. Rosie: And you two met through a want ad in the paper? Darren: yeah it seems quite romanctic doesn't it? Rosie: It does! (people laugh) Darren: it's not! at all!...He was in a band that needed a singer and uh...I was about 1 of 20 people that auditioned.....did u ever see Little Shop 'O Horrors? Rosie: yes of course! Darren: There's this whole line at the end of the movie, it's called umm...Skid Row (?) And there's this part where it's actually made for a female singer. And i sang that very badly, my voice split half way through it, and I somehow got the job. Rosie: no kidding Darren: no kidding Rosie: Can you sing it? Darren: you want me to do it right now? Rosie: yeah, come on! (Darren starts laughing) Darren: this is what i did, and i'm just doing this because i love you. Rosie: okay.. Darren: I can't believe i'm doing this! (sings the song) Rosie: I'd hire you too if you sang like that!! (everyone's screaming and whistling) Darren: But! I didn't sing it like that! (he starts laughing even more) it was about 3 keys higher and my voice split. But i think through sheer courage i got the job... Rosie: Really! I love the Little Shop 'O Horrors Darren: Oh i'm obsessed. Rosie: (sings) That's my favorite song! Darren: yeah, that's very good, yeah! Rosie: Do u like musicals? Darren: Love them! Rosie: Darren! Oh me and you could be such good friends! Darren: I know! Well how come u never call me!?! Rosie: How come you didn't give me your #?!? (laughing) Darren: I was here for a full year actually. Rosie: you were? Darren: I was living in New York. I was living in Union Square and i can tell you i was living on East 13th Street between 3 and 4 because i don't live there anymore! Rosie: yes, you know because your fans get a little crazy for you guys! Darren: Actually our fans are pretty cool. We have all these people on the internet that are very supportive And you know, if there's a radio station that's not playing our songs, they get about a thousand phone calls, death threats! Rosie: Exactly! You got your whole little lobby there, Savage Garden lobby. Darren: mmhmm.. Rosie: You know I find it great when you tell your fans not to send you gifts. Darren: You know we get paid a lot of money, we get paid way too much, I love doing this, I'd do it for free (puts his finger up) Don't tell the record company that! I'm somebody who use to sing in the bathroom and all of a sudden we're selling millions of records and fans love you and they throw all those toys on stage. And they know I'm a fan of Star Wars, so they buy me all this Star Wars stuff, but i have it all! And we often tell our fans on the net, don't buy us any give gifts. We can buy this stuff ourselves, donate money to charity, or write me a letter saying you donated $1 to a children's charity. Or instead of giving me a soft toy, give it to a children's hospital! Rosie: Yeah that's a wonderful thing! Darren: (shaking head) And they're doing it too! Rosie : yes! (everyone's clapping) Rosie: Now is it true that you're clumsy on stage? A friend of mine went to a concert and said you fell! is this true? Darren: (doing Dr. Evil impression) The details of my clumsyness are quite consequencial! (Rosie's laughing) Darren: i'm very clumsy (looking embarrased) Rosie: Are u really? Darren: You know i fell off the stage in my home town! I was like uh...playing to a sold out crowd of about 20,000 and there's this cat walk here and there's suppose to be this glow in the dark tape there. But every other night it wasn't, and that night it wasn't! And you know I was "every time i see your face....." and i fell! (Rosie's laughing uncontrolably) And i hurt my knee for a week. (Rosie's still laughing) Darren: But to this day, I pretend it was a very rock and roll thing to do! Rosie: Yeah, you were diving into the mosh pit! Darren: yeah! i was Michael Hutchence, Jim Morrison! Rosie: Yeah!(laughing still) Rosie: Darren Hayes you are delightful. Affirmation out in stores now, go buy it!
