Michael Owen supported Everton as a boy but has turned out to be a hit for Liverpool instead. He has
already lived up to his early promise, finishing two consecutive seasons as the Premiership's top scorer
while being the youngest player to play for England this century. While still a schoolboy, Owen broke Ian
Rush scoring record, attracting attention. Until his England debut, he had scored on every other debut match,
and his scoring ability has never been in question. During France'98, he scored an incredible goal against
Argentina and attracted the attention of many clubs. However, Liverpool have retained the services of this
young goalscoring hero.
Nevertheless, Owen will remember this season as the one where he learned how fickle the media could be.
Dogged by injuries, Owen missed out on pre-season as well as the opening matchs of the season. On his Premier League
return, he scored a brace against Leceister as the media hailed his return.
Since then, Owen has not been scoring as regularly and has continued to suffer from injuries and dips in form.
As such, he has become a target for the press. At a time when Owen is vulnerable, being palgued by injuries and
suffering from a loss of form, it can be said that the Golden Boy has loss some glitter.
Recently, Owen also suffered the indignity of being labelled a cheat by a referee after being accused of diving.
All this however, takes nothing from the fact that Michael Owen is still one of the most promising prospects to
emerge.
