(Popstar!, August 2000)
Hi to all the BSB fans!!! My name is Angie and I went to the Backstreet Boys concert with my best friend, Jennie, in Atlanta, Georgia (or "Hotlanta" as the guys like to call it), on February 19, 2000. It was an AWESOME show!! Their "Into the Millennium Tour" is truly the HOTTEST concert on the planet!!
The concert was at the Georgia Dome and sold out a crowd of 70,000 people, creating a record for Atlanta and the Backstreet Boys as the largest sold-out concert they've had in the US! The guys were so pumped for this show and the fans mirrored their enthusiasm! If you've seen the guys in concert, read on and experience all over again. If you've never seen the guys in concert, then I invite you to experience it through my eyes at the Atlanta show...
The stadium is packed and the room is dark, except for green and blue glowsticks all around. Loud scremas from excited fans fill the stadium as the anticipation grows for the HOT group that is about to come out!
Then, the theme from Star Wars plays, and the spotlight shines on five figures flying above on lighted boards, emerging from a smoky haze and approaching the stage in the center. There are the guys: A.J., Brian, Nick, Howie, and Kevin!
The crowd reacts with total hysteria!
The guys are wearing superhero bodysuits that reflect their new comic book, The Backstreet Project. They march to each side of the stage to line up and are greeted by screaming fans and flashes of light. Then they break into "Larger Than Life" for a totally upbeat performance, prompting the audience of all ages to dance and sing along!
After "Larger Than Life," they sing "Get Down" and "The One." Then the guys each make their intros and send personal thank-yous to their fans, prompting more screams from the audience. Howie thanks us for making Backstreet history with the largest concert they've perfromed in front of in the US; AJ acknowledges all the "beatiful ladies in the house"; Nick asks if "Hotlanta knows how to party"; Brian thanks everyone for his birthday wishes displayed on banners; and Kevin asks to turn the lights up so he can see all the people and especially the "Georgia Peaches" in the audience.
After changing outfits, they return wearing black leather and sing, "As Long As You Love Me" and "Don't Wanna Lose You Now" followed by "Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart)" where the guys take flight over the crowd on wires, with Kevin and Howie doing amazing backflips in the air while AJ flies over us, wetting some lucky people below him from his water bottle!
After another costume change, the guys return for "Don't Want You Back"--a song with attitud and the guys sure have it for this one! Add in a ladder for stunts, and the guys have the moves that would make any girl scream like crazy!
For "The Perfect Fan," five lucky mothers and daughters join the guys onstage. Kevin tells us that his mom is in the audience from Lexington, KY, so it's sweet to know he's singing to her during that song! During the part of the song where the violins play, AJ does this ballet dance that is totally *hilarious*!!!
Next, the lights go dim again and a spotlight shines on the center of the stage as a white grand piano slowly comes down. Kevin comes out to take his place at the piano and plays an instrumental piece with the female saxophonist. Truly beautiful! Then the other four guys join him for "Back To Your Heart" as he continues to play.
Then it's time to pick things back up.
The arena goes dark and the sound of thunder is played along with flashes of light. The familiar drum beat starts "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and the crowd joins in on the "ooua, ooua" part at the beginning. The guys really get into the song, especially AJ, and at one point he comes out of his shirt and throws it to some really lucky fan!
They repeat the line, "If you wanna party, let me hear you scream!" which the audience loves! Then they sing "We've Got It Goin' One" and "That's The Way I Like It" before they slow things back down to do "Spanish Eyes," "I'll Never Break Your Heart," "No One Else Comes Close," and "All I Have to Give." They all look so good wearing the gray pinstripe suits for these songs.
For "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" the guys sit on stools in a circle on the middle of the stage that rotates. This song gave me chills just listening to their angelic voices harmonizing and filling the entire arena. Breathtaking!
Next to last is "It's Gotta Be You" where at the end they each introduce the band and dancers while the other four guys do the most hilarious stuff--Brian plays with a basketball onstage, AJ does impersonations, Nick introduces Howie as "MCD" from "wanna-be-a-rapper-records" where Howie does this cute rap and gets a little freaky with his dancing but the crowd loves it!
Their last song is their hit "I Want It That Way" and they keep repeating the end like they don't want to leave--and neither do we!
But...all good thigns must come to an end. They thank the fans again before they take a final bow and depat, promising to come back again!
The concert was such a blast! These guys truly know how to entertain! Seeing them on TV is one thing, but actually being at their concert is whole other experience! BSB give their all for their fans!
Thanks guys, for an AWESOME show and for making so many people happy through your music.
Keeping the Backstreet Pride Alive Into the Millennium and Beyond,
Popstar!
