They can turn a mushy love song into a smash hit with their eyes closed, but Backstreet Boys' latest single, "The Call," finds Orlando's fab five veering into darker territory. "It's about a guy who's being a dog. He's calling his girl on his cell phone and saying he can't talk, but really he's out with somebody else," says Howie Dorough, 27, of the group's second single from the multiplatiunum album, Black & Blue. "People won't expect this from us." A.J. Mclean says the lyrics reflect a sad reality: "Guys cheat, girls cheat, everybody cheats. It's tough when that happens." The edgy, beats-laden tune also signals a musical departure for the Boys, who worked with well-known BSB collaborators Max Martin and Rami on the song. "We told them, 'You can push the limits on this one. Musically, make it hard. Make it different,'" says A.J., 23. "Go as far as you want."
