The Backstreet Boys hit Quit Playing Games With My Heart is heard non-stop on pop radio; the band has been everywhere this year. How long have the Boys been together? How did they get their start?
The five-man band, together since 1992, is no overnight sensation. Dubbed the "Spice Boys" by some, they were huge in Europe (selling 12 million albums, winning the '96 MTV European Viewers Choice awards) before they began making the girls swoon here these past 18 months. It all started when Howie Dorough, 25, A.J. McLean, 20, and Nick Carter, 18, kept bumping into each other at various auditions around Orlando, FFla. They decided to form a band and hooked up with Kevin Richardson, 25, who had been playing Aladdin at Disney World; Richardson called his cousin Brian Littrell, 23 (who had surgery last summer on a congenital heart defect).
