The name: 'Smashing Pumpkins' the name was made up by Billy Corgan the lead singer and guitar, even before the band got togeather!

The band was made up by Billy & James in 1988. their first gigs were in 1988 at Polish Bars and one called the Erigon. And they have found the two other pumpkins: D'Arcy (bass) and Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). D'Arcy was found at a night club and Billy and her got into an arugment and then things carried on from there...then they met Jimmy though a record producer and then they were conplete. In April 11, 1988 they opened for Janes Addiction. Their first tapes that Billy made were named Moon and Eye. Moon featured 'Bye June' and Eye had 'Rhinocerous'. Did you know Gish was named after a 1930's actor Lilian Gish?But since then the band has had to let go of the friend and band member Jimmy Chamberlain because his drug & alchohol problem had gone too far, and their traveling keyboardist had lost his life after Jimmy and he had been abusing drugs on their tour. But quickly they found a new drummer, Matt 'Cosmo' Walker and now they have Kenny Aronoff for their 'Adore' tour '98.
