THIS INTERVIEW WAS TAPED FROM AN INTERVIEW ON A RADIO STATION IN OZ.
Richard Kingsmill: Would you describe love as being a huge part of, both
having it and losing it, of this album?
Billy: Yes. It's about the entire album, honestly, it's… the whole
album is based on love. Good and bad.
Richard: But you wouldn't describe it as a "love album" because that
makes it sound a bit kiche.
Billy: No, it's kind of missing the point because on one hand you have
the desire that you feel with love, and also there is the responsibility
and the sadness that comes with love, because even if you love somebody,
even if you're in a good relationship, there is always that kind of
feeling that, well, "what happens if we break up". There is a lot of
emotion that goes back and forth with love, so, ahhh…
Richard: And Ava Adore is a lot like that, because there is a certain
sinisterness…to it.
Billy: This is true…ah…I don't know what the hell I was trying to
say with that song. (laughs) That song is definitely a product
of…um…just stuff coming right out the top of my head.
Richard: Is it?
Billy: Yeah, I wrote the song sitting on the bed with my girlfriend,
ahh, like in ten minutes. Really wrote all the lyrics, everything in ten
minutes. It's…it just…I left it! I didn't, I didn't…you know
there's like lines in there, I'm thinking… you know, there's like a
line "In you I crash cars"…I mean, I don't know what the hell I'm
trying to say. (laughs).
D'arcy: (sarcastically) It makes sense to me.
Richard: (laughs)
Billy: So, I…I…really just like lettin' the intuition carry me on,
in songs like that. I tried not to let the Billy Brain get too, you
know…and try to change it to…eh.. "in you I feel sad stars" or
anything.
All: (laugh)
Billy: Or change it to…
D'arcy: (interrupting) That woulda been a good one.
Billy: Yeah.
D'arcy: …and teddy bears. (laughs).
Richard: Did you question the "whore" line at all?
Billy: ahh…well…(laughs)…no…I mean yes and no. I mean, put it
this way…is there a part of me that goes "hmm, that's pretty…that's
pretty pushy!" um yeah! But that's the thing. I don't censor myself as
an artist, um, I personally kind of think that I'm kinda an idiot. And,
and, and…
D'arcy: (laughs)
Billy: …and God is great, and God speaking through you is much better
than anything I could say. So maybe it is God speaking, who knows. I
will probably get a lot of letters now.
Richard: You've won over I… you've won over…
D'arcy: (interrupting Richard) From me!
Richard: Yeah! A new section of audiences has come to your music.
Billy: Yeah, exactly.
Richard: Yeah!
Billy: But if you know…
D'arcy: We're not a Christian rock band.
Billy: Well we're start…well we're…
Richard: So that's the change that's happened (joking).
D'arcy: (sarcastically) Yes, now we haven't told anyone before.
Richard: (joking) God it's taken me a while, but I've cracked it.
Billy: Wait, listen to this. You're gonna like this. Somebody goes "do
you think you've become more commercial?" And I said "well, you know,
when your first single, the first line of the first song that you
release is `it's you that I adore, you'll always be my whore' yeah…I
guess we're really moving for a bigger market here… (laughs)
D'arcy: (laughs)
Billy: So, you know.
