From The Austin Chronicle, November 9th, 1990

Review by Ken Lieck

On this, their self-titled debut on Dallas's Carpe Diem Records, the aptly-named
Course of Empire thunder through a set of powerful conquest rock. Propelled by
the booming beat of their dual drummer Anthony Headley and Chad Lovell, the
Course offer here music to play war games to - if you can stay off your feet
long enough - matching the storming power of heavy metal and industrial rock
while rarely bowing to the conventions of either. Rather than looking up more
synonyms for "powerful" (The Dallas Observer even dug up "whomping") I'll leave
it at this: the album at hand is a credible document of what many consider to be
the best band currently emerging from the Deep Ellum scene.
