(The “Veggie Question”) by Elliott Anderson
There are many many vegetables in the world.
Which would you like to be?
Do you want to be a
tomato? Or would
you prefer to be celery?
Think of the size and shape of a good tomato. The
skin which puffs back out when you push it in with the
tip of your fingernail. The
color.
Many tomatoes are not healthy, or pretty to look at,
but if you could be a tomato, the healthiest and best
tomato you could be,
Wouldn’t that be
better than being celery?
Some would like to be celery because of the better
living conditions. All of you together in a little bunch,
growing quickly and shooting up into the air. So nice!
But that’s the life of a celery plant. That’s not the
being of a celery plant.
That’s not who you are.
Some say that bananas are better. They are sleeker.
Their skin is smoother. And all bananas are good
looking, even when they are old and
freckly!
So would you prefer to be a banana instead of a
tomato?
Bananas have a good
life. Think of the wonderful
climate. The beautiful blue skies. The warm earth, the
breezes. The company, everyone together, growing
together in a nice little bunch. Growing and growing,
pointing up together towards the sky.
Even after harvest
you're still together!
And the travelling you’d do. All over the world
you’d travel. Here and there and everywhere!!
Everybody loves you! You’re even welcome in places
where you don’t grow.
Wow, so cool.
So which
would it be? A celery? A banana? A tomato? A tomato is what I’d like to be.
