The debut album by Something Stranger..., titled The Fear Of Words, was released on the independant Umbo Gumbo label in the late summer of 1999.

Something Stranger... is Claudio Tinnirello.
Something Stranger... was originally formed in 1991 in the UK. As a two-man electronic-pop band, Something Stranger... played live venues over a two year period. Claudio, the singer and songwriter, moved to the USA and the band was put into hiatus.
In 1998, based in California, Claudio revived Something Stranger... as a solo project. Working with producer Polo Jones, who has worked with artists such as Italian rock singer Zucchero and Whitney Houston, Something Stranger... recorded its debut album The Fear Of Words. This album was recorded and mixed in Santa Cruz and San Jose, California.
The Fear Of Words features 10 tracks, highlighting the band's ability to create catchy songs ranging from electronic-modern-rock to seductive ballads.
Claudio was born in the UK and now lives in Santa Cruz, California. He began writing songs when he was fifteen and joined his first band at seventeen. After singing in several rock bands, he formed Something Stranger... so that he could pursue his love of pop music. In previous lives he's been a computer programmer, a photographic model, a DJ and a forklift driver. To this day he hasn't written a song about forklift trucks.
Influences for the band include 80's New Wave, Alternative & Modern Rock, Brit-pop and tons of one-hit-wonders!
Claudio is also working with another synth-pop band moonlife which is currently playing live in San Francisco. An album will be released later in the year and a video is being planned for broadcasting on a national music video show.
| Something Stranger - The Fear of Words
Remember Tears for Fears, Human League and A Flock of Seagulls? Claudio Tinnirello of Something Stranger plays capable, professional synth-rock reminiscent of some of the '80s stuff we came up listening to on top-40 radio stations. Perhaps most intensely, Something Stranger sounds eerily like Duran Duran. The opening riffs of The Fear of Words will take you back to those heady years of the '80s when pop seemed simultaneously in a rut and tantalizingly full of promise. What I'm most impressed with is the lyrics throughout The Fear of Words. These lyrics are more sophisticated than those sung by many of the big-name rock bands on MTV these days. There's an underlying note of male sensitivity from the first track to the last. In "Stay," he's the one saying he wants more out of the relationship! In "Sunset Bleeds," he's putting it out there that he's there for his girl no matter what goes down. In "Right Over," Tinnirello's ready to get it on, talking about how he lit all the candles, everything is ready, and he can't wait to see his woman bathed in the candle light. Despite being delivered in '80s parlance musically, the mood was convincingly sexy and would work as music to get it on to. --B.M.W. |
