Robbie's new single Angels shows him at his most sensitive. So while he's in the mood, we got him to reveal all...
So, what fo you write your songs about?
I just sit back and observe what's going on. The song Life Thru A Lens is actually me observing everything around me. so watch out- I might come up with a song about this interview!
Have you stared on your next album yet?
Give us a chance! Well, actually I have, but at the moment I'm concentrating on the first album and the tour that goes with it.
Will your next album be very different?
I want it to be a mixture of country, hip hop and The Beatles. This time i just want to create a buzz with the album, but the next one nobodywill be able to ignore!
How do you come up with ideas for songs?
Well, yesterday in rehearsals I got a guitar out and just did a few chords. I got up the chorus then gave up!
So you play the guitar now, do you?
Yes. Well, sort of! I know how to put chords together, but I don't play fantastically!
And can you play piano, too?
The Piano? No, I haven't got a clue how that goes! (laughs) No really, I guess there's plenty of time for me to learn it. I write most of my songs with a bloke called Guy Chambers, althought I do most of the lyrics on my own. I feel really lucky to have Guy- he's a very talented, lovely person and it's a partnership I really want to grow.
Can you remember where you wrote all your songs?
Yeah. Like, Killing Me was written in my bedroom in Stoke with my mum. I don't have to be on my own- I can sit in a car and just go, 'Shut up, shut up, I've got a song!' I get a kick out of writing lyrics in front of people, because they can say, 'That's good,' or 'No, that's crap!'
Do you pay attention to criticism
Yeah. Well, sometimes! If someone disagrees with what I'm doing, I just make it happen!
You've got your confidence back, then!
It's weird. That whole self-belief thing went out of the window for a long time, and only came back when I got reviews for my album. That's pitiful, isn't it? But I'm confident now!
Have you ever taking singing lessons?
No, but I'm not proud of it- they're a great idea and I'd probably sing a lot better if I had taken some!
So, where do you live at the mo?
I live wherever I lay my head- baby, that's my home! I've got a place in London, but I'm never there- it's like a hotel. I don't own it. I've got lots of trainers, but I don't own a house. But I will soon!
So, do you still go to see Port Vale play?
No, unfortunately. I haven't got time, but I watch it on telly and play when I can.
What do you think you'll be doing a year from now?
I'm not concerned about the next year. I'd like to be here doing an interview with you, saying didn't the album sell well, and here's the new album and all that sort of stuff... But today I've got a few interviews and that's all I want to concentrate on!
You really do live for the day, don't you?
Yes- I used to live for the weekends, but not anymore!
Who are your best mates at the moment?
My mother and my management team. Oh yeah, and my band!
So are you realy close to them?
Yeah. They're really into my album and they want this band thing to work. When I look around during rehearsals and see their faces, I know they're really happy to be there. I'm not like the boss- I'm a friend to them, and they're friends to me.
How many people are in your band?
There's me, then Smiley on drums, Andy on keyboards, gary on guitar and Guy and Fil on bass.
You seem a lot more sorted recently...
Yes, I'm more sensitive. I know what I've got to do and why I'm doing it- it's because I enjoy it, and I forgot that for a long time. When I was going out loads I wasn't doing the best I could because my brain was dead, but now it's not an efford. I'm so happy about what I'm doing, where I am and who I am.
Are you thinking about marriage yet?
A lot of people think happiness comes with getting married and having babies. For me, I've got to be happy with me before I think of getting married.
Have you got a girlfriend at the moment?
I can't have a girlfriend as there's nothing I can give her because I'm far too in love with what I'm doing. That's more important to me than anything else at the moment!
