Gerry is now available on both VHS and DVD.

"Gerry is a very different movie. Gus had to take out a bank loan to make it, scrape every cent together. Not because it’s no good, but just because of the subject matter, I mean it’s essentially just Casey Affleck and me walking around the desert." - Matt Damon, August 2002

February 14, 2003: Well, today Gerry will finally be released to a few theaters. Probably not much chance of it ever going really wide, but if you live in a major city, keep your eye out for it. If you've seen the film, let me know what you think...I'd be glad to put it up on the site as well. And though the majority of the world didn't get the chance to see Gerry in 2002, that didn't stop Amy Taubin (Village Voice) from putting it on her top 10 list of 2002. Taubin isn't the only one giving kudos to this rather experimental film, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly, among others, have written positive reviews as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what other prominent critics have to say as it trickles its way into theatres. Click here to see what the critics are saying so far. Happy Valentine's Day.

September 9, 2002: I have gotten a few reports/reviews back from fans who were lucky enough to catch Gerry at the Toronto Film Festival...I am in the process of adding their reports/reviews to the site. Once it's all set up, you can get there by clicking here. Should be up by tonight...

September 6, 2002: As it nears its eventual release date, Gerry is beginning to get some more attention. I have a few fan reviews that I'll post shortly. The film is also currently playing at the Toronto Film Festival. The only information available thus far was provided by Roger Ebert in his column today:

"And now to "Gerry." You may hate it, but you may want to see it because your fellow moviegoers will be talking of nothing else. Directed by Gus Van Sant, it was written by and stars Casey Affleck and Matt Damon as two young men who go on a hike in the desert and get lost. And there you have it. They remain lost for a very long time (I would not dream of telling you if they ever get found), and they talk about a good many things, at first in good cheer, later in desperation.

There are moments of humor worthy of silent comedy, as when one gets atop a big rock and is not sure how to get down, and monologues of droll wit. But to describe the film in those terms is to miss its heart, which is silent and empty and lost and thirsty and despairing. Gus Van Sant is one of the few directors with the nerve to point his camera into the desert and just keep walking, and Affleck and Damon achieve something in their performances that is existential grandeur, if you like the film, and transcendent stupidity, if you don't."

Expect many more changes to this page - as well as links - as the release date approaches (2/7/03).

January 17, 2002: Despite quite brutal reviews from critics attending Sundance, Gerry has nonetheless found its North American distribution. ThinkFilm, launched just prior to the Toronto International Film Festival last September, has paid at least $1 million for the rights to Gus Van Sant's latest film. No word on a release date yet...but there is a fairly decent review of the film (including two pictures) in the current issue of Film Comment, and if you want to check out some of the on-line reviews from Sundance, i've included links to them below. I suggest reading Ebert's first, as he seems to be the only one willing to take the time to actually think about the film, while too many others are willing to write it off quickly as pretentious (or worse). Word is, this is a highly experimental film, miles removed from the likes of Finding Forrester. I'll be back with more information as it becomes available.

January 2002:Well, it looks like we have a new Gus van Sant film. All I know for now is that the film was shot in Argentina, wrapped in August 2001, and is some sort of tale of two men who get lost in the desert and begin, slowly, to dehydrate. Early word is quite negative, and Gus himself admitted to the Sundance audience before showing the film that he hadn't been this nervous in quite a long time.
