Chanter Sisters Doreen Chanter and Irene Chanter appear in lots of albums as guest vocalists. They recorded their own albums. In this one, they had fantastic backing musicians: Ray Russell (guitar), Hughie Burns (guitar), Micky Moody (guitar), Dave Markee (bass), John Giblin (bass), Martin Drover (trumpet), Chris Mercer (sax), Ray Warleigh (sax), Pete Wingfield (keyboards), Tony Hymas (keyboards), Ann Odell (string arrangements), Ray Cooper (percussion), Simon Phillips (drums), Henry Spinetti (drums), plus backing vocals by Jimmy Chambers and Tony Jackson. 
Andy Mackay This was one of the solo albums by Roxy Music sax player. Andy and Ray had played together in the Rock Follies project, as we can read in Ray bio. This album features Ray Russell (guitar, also strings and brass arrangements), Phil Manzanera (guitar), Mo Foster (bass), Tony Stevens (bass), Chris Parren (keyboards), Tim Weather (flute), Pete Van Hooke (drums), Paul Thompson (drums). As we can see, some of Andy's mates in Roxy Music, as well as most of the Rock Follies lineup. It was recorded between March and July 1978.

The album was reissued on CD in 1990. But, good news are that it has been reissued again, this time with 4 bonus tracks.

Cliff Richard One of my favourite albums by Cliff Richard, as it includes my favourite song 'Ocean deep'. The list of musicians is quite long: Ray Russell (guitar in the song 'Please don't fall in love'), Alan Parker (guitar), John Clark (guitar), Terry Britten (guitar, backing vocals), Mark Griffiths (bass), Mike Batt (keyboards), Craig Pruess (keyboards), Nick Glennie-Smith (keyboards), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), Ronnie Aspery (sax), Mel Collins (sax), Martin Drover (trumpet), Brian Bennett (drums), Graham Jarvis (drums), Ray Cooper (percussion), Tony Carr (percussion), and backing vocals by Tony Rivers, Stu Calver & John Perry.
Ph.D. Ph.D. was an interesting duo comprising: Jim Diamond (vocals)
Tony Hymas (keyboards) But, being a duo, they used other musicians in their albums. This was their second album, and it features: Ray Russell (guitar on the track 'Fifth of May'), Jeff Beck (guitar, although uncredited - he's mentioned in the Thanks section. By the way, Hughie Burns also appears in the Thanks section), Simon Phillips (drums), Mark Craney (drums), and backing vocals by Helen Chappelle, Joy Yates and George Chandler.
Mo Foster This album was Mo's 2nd solo album. We can find here Ray Russell (guitar), Gary Moore (guitar), Geoff Castle (keyboards), Julian Littman (mandolin), Ray Warleigh (flute), Stuart Brooks (trumpet), Iain Ballamy (sax), Stan Sulzman (sax), Gary Husband (drums, keyboards), Frank Ricotti (percussion), Greg Knowles (percussion), and vocals by Karen Bates. 
OTHER SESSIONS

Bill Fay He was an interesting folk poet. He only released two albums (Bill Fay in 1970, and Time of the last persecution in 1971), plus a single. Luckily, there's a CD reissue, Bill Fay / Time of the last persecution plus... including all his recorded material.

The musical director for Bill Fay was Mike Gibbs, so he brought some of his musicians to play here. Among others: Ray Russell (guitar) and the late John Marshall (drums).

Paul Korda This album features Chris Spedding (guitar), Ray Russell (guitar), Andy Roberts (guitar), Alan Gorrie (bass, guitar), Owen McIntyre (guitar), Mike Storey (keyboards), Rob Tait (drums), Madeline Bell (vocals), Doris Troy (vocals), Nanette Newman (vocals). It was recorded in February 1971.
Horslips They are a very nice Irish band, still active nowadays. This was their third album, and Ray Russell appears not as guitarist, but as brass arranger. 
Annette & Victor Brox Victor Brox was a member of Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation (see my pages on Aynsley Dunbar for more info), also appearing in the Jesus Christ Superstar album. Along with his wife Annette, they released this album, with appearances by his old mates in Retaliation John Moorshead (guitar) and Alex Dmochovski (bass), plus Ray Russell (guitar), Larry Gannon (guitar), John Porter (bass), Tony Moss (bass), Ray Warleigh (sax), Jeff Walters (horns), Keith Bailey (drums), Lol Creme (drums), Paul Burgess (drums), Bruce Mitchell (percussion). 
Prelude They were a trio formed by Brian Hume (vocals, guitar), Irene Hume (vocals) and Ian Vardy (vocals, guitar). This was their 4th album, featuring Ray Russell (guitar), the late Isaac Guillory (guitar, keyboards), Roger Rettig (guitar), Rod Clements (bass), Patrice Lemoine (keyboards), Steve Gregory (sax), Pick Withers (drums), Mike Driscoll (drums), Linda Curtis (percussion). 
AJ Webber Sorry, I don't know who she is. This album features Ray Russell (guitar), Albert Lee (guitar), Mike D'Abo (piano), Tony Hymas (keyboards), Jean Roussel (keyboards), Tony Roberts (sax), Phil Todd (sax), Simon Phillips (drums), Gerry Conway (drums).
William Lyall

The late Billy Lyall was a member of Bay City Rollers, and later he was the keyboardist in succesful Scottish band Pilot. He later collaborated with Alan Parsons (Pilot's producer), and made his only solo album, with help from many musicians: his old friends from Pilot Ian Bairnson (guitar) and David Paton (bass), plus some others, such as Robert Ahwai (guitar), Ray Russell (sitar on 'Sleep'), Phil Chen (bass), Ronnie Leahy (keyboards), Chris Mercer (sax), Barry De Souza (drums) and Phil Collins (drums). He sadly died in December 1989, of an AIDS-related illness. The album was reissued on CD with two bonus tracks (the single versions of 'Maniac' and 'Solo casting'). 
Scrounger I don't know if this was a real band, or a solo artist under this name. Here, we can find Paul Lewis (vocals), Ray Russell (guitar), Paul Keogh (guitar), Mo Foster (bass), Frank McDonald (bass), Ian Curnow (keyboards, vocals), Pete Van Hooke (drums), Mike Nicholls (drums). The album was producer by veteran Mike Hurst.
Suprise Sisters As far as  I know, they only released one album. Full of great musicians: Ray Russell (guitar), Bruce Lynch (guitar), Brent Forbes (bass), Jean Roussel (keyboards), Blue Weaver (keyboards), Phil Kenzie (sax), Ray Warleigh (sax), Gerry Conway (drums), Frank Ricotti (percussion). Produced by the mythical Tony Visconti.
Hudson-Ford A duo comprising Richard Hudson (vocals, guitar) and John Ford (guitar, bass). They had been playing together for years, first in Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, later joining the fantastic band The Strawbs. They left them to start a solo career as a duo. This was their 4th album, and the list of musicians includes Ray Russell (guitar), Ian Bairnson (guitar), Dave Markee (bass), Brent Forbes (bass), Chris Parren (keyboards), Graham Preskett (keyboards, violin), Martin Drover (trumpet), Ken Laws (drums). If someone wants to know, they split soon after this album (although they formed a new band, The Monks). 
Denne & Gold A duo comprising Micky Denne (vocals, guitar) and Ken Gold (vocals, guitar, drums). Recorded with help from Ray Russell (guitar), Paul Keogh (guitar), Alan Tarney (guitar), Dave Lawson (keyboards), Lynton Naiff (keyboards), Nigel Wilkinson (drums), Ray Cooper (percussion). 
Troll This was a progressive band, but this album was only released in Germany. Featuring Ray Russell (guitar) and Alan Parker (guitar). 
Ben Bashan I don't know who he is, but this album is listed right next to another one by Neil Bashan, and the list of musicians is almost the same. Probably, they're family... :) This album features Ray Russell (guitar), Roy Babbington (bass), Paul Westwood (bass), Lynton Naiff (keyboards), Peter Van Hooke (drums), Ray Cooper (percussion), and vocals by Vicki Brown, Helen Chappelle, Liza Strike, Gary Osborne, Judy Tzuke, Alan Carvell. 
Neil Bashan I don't know who he is. This album features Ray Russell (guitar), Roy Babbington (bass), Paul Westwood (bass), Lynton Naiff (keyboards), Peter Van Hooke (drums), and backing vocals by Vicki Brown, Helen Chappelle, Gary Osborne and Liza Strike. 
Dennis O'Brien I don't know who he is. Vocalist and keyboardist, he's backed here by: Ray Russell (guitar), Jim Gannon (guitar), Phil Palmer (guitar), John Turnbull (guitar), Pete Willsher (steel guitar), Gary Taylor (bass), Tommy Eyre (keyboards), Pete Solley (keyboards), Raphael Ravenscroft (sax), Richard Burgess (drums), Dave Mattacks (drums) Micky Waller (drums), and vocals by Aliki Holland, Viv McAuliffe, Jane Kennaway, Simon Morris. . 
Judy Tzuke A very fine vocalist, she usually counts with great musicians in his albums and live bands.

K2 K2  was a project by Kornell Kovach, Yugoslavian keyboardist. K2lineup is:

They released the album Why. With two special guests: Bernie Marsden (guitar) and Ray Russell (guitar). The album was recorded in London during February/March 1980. Mostly co-written by Kovach and producer/engineer Peter McNamee. It says: "keyboards supplied by Rod Argent Keyboards" (he owns a keyboard store). 
Lucio Battisti This Italian artist was quite famous in Spain.

Lulu The veteran singer from the 60s released this album in 1981, recorded with Ray Russell (guitar), Alan Jones (bass), Alan Tarney (bass), Mike Moran (keyboards), Lynton Naiff (keyboards), Peter Van Hooke (drums), Graham Jarvis (drums), Trevor Spencer (drums), Ray Cooper (percussion), and backing vocals by Carol Kenyon and Tony Rivers. 
Gary Benson This album features Ray Russell (guitar), Steve Lukather (guitar), Ricky Hitchcock (guitar), Kevin Peek (guitar), Leland Sklar (bass), Rob Young (keyboards), Steve Porcaro (programming), Les Binks (drums), Russ Kunkel (drums), Tom Nichol (drums), Frank Ricotti (percussion), and backing vocals by Leah Kunkel and the great, late Vicki Brown. 
Heaven 17 This was a trio formed by: Glenn Gregory (vocals), Martyn Ware (vocals, programming), Ian Craig Marsh (programming).

Scott Walker A supreme singer, once a member of The Walker Brothers. In this solo project, he seemed to break with his previous style, conceiving a dense album, far away from pop scene. With Ray Russell (guitar), Phil Palmer (guitar), Mark Knopfler (guitar), Mo Foster (bass), Brian Gascoigne (keyboards), Mark Isham (trumpet), Evan Parker (sax), Peter Van Hooke (drums), and harmony vocals by Billy Ocean. 
Oscar Benton & Blues Band I don't know this artist. This album features Ray Russell (guitar), Paul Keogh (guitar), Chris Rea (guitar), Les Hurdle (bass), John Mealing (keyboards), Mike Moran (keyboards), Kenny Baker (trumpet), and vocals by Sam Brown, Sue Glover, Sunny Leslie. 
Tina Turner The acid queen; a superb performer since the early 60s.

Private dancer marked her return to stardom, after a low profile in the early 80s. The list of musicians is simply amazing: Jeff Beck (guitar), Ray Russell (guitar), Terry Britten (guitar), Hal Lindes (guitar), Richie Zito (guitar), Jamie West-Oram (guitar), John Illsley (bass, from Dire Straits), Joe Sample (keyboards), Rupert Hine (keyboards), Alan Clark (keyboards), Billy Livsey (keyboards), Nick Glennie-Smith (keyboards), Nick Plythas (keyboards), Greg Walsh (keyboards), Mel Collins (sax), Wilton Felder (sax), Gary Barnacle (sax), Graham Broad (drums), Trevor Morais (drums), Terry Williams (drums), Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler (drums), Graham Jarvis (drums), Frank Ricotti (percussion), Julian Diggle (percussion), and backing vocals by Tessa Niles and members of Heaven 17. By the way, there is an extended edition with 7 bonus tracks.

Simply the best is a compilation (although it features tracks from only 3 different albums). The list of musicians is obviously quite similar to the ones shown above, plus some others such as Rod Stewart (vocals), Jeff Golub (guitar), Eddie Martinez (guitar), Phil Palmer (guitar), Pat Thrall (guitar), Carmine Rojas (bass), T.M. There's also a reissue with bonus tracks, but I don't have it, so I don't know how many additional tracks contains. 

Richard T. Bear Featuring Ray Russell (guitar), Peter Wolpl (guitar), Andy Pask (bass), Harold Faltermeyer (keyboards), Mike Moran (keyboards), Curt Cress (drums), Harold Fisher (drums), Ray Cooper (percussion), and vocals by Mark Spiro and Miriam Stockley. 
B.J. Cole What can I say about B.J. Cole? Fabulous pedal steel guitarist, his list of credits is really awesome. Someday soon he'll have his own pages in my Olympus. In this solo album, he performs several classical works (by Debussy, Ravel or Satie). Featuring Ray Russell (guitar), Guy Jackson (guitar), Richard Hartley (keyboards), Bob Loveday (violin), Danny Thompson (bass), Gavin Harrison (drums). 

Evelyn Glennie Evelyn Glennie is a great percussionist (she's a Grammy winner); she has played different styles of music, but mainly playing classical works.

Rhythm in song was her first album (as far as I know). Ray Russell appears as arranger and conductor.

Her greatest hits is obviously a compilation, a 2CD, with some new tracks, as well as two collaborations with Bjork. Some of the musicians featured are Ray Russell (conductor), Chris Laurence (bass), John Earle (sax), Gary Kettel (percussion), Greg Knowles (percussion), Ralph Salmins (drums). Here, we can find Glennie's own compositions, as well as tracks by Saint-Saens, Rimsky-Korsakov or Chopin. 


The Electric Phoenix The Electric Phoenix is a vocal ensemble. On this album, they perform some works by composer Neely Bruce, with this lineup backing them:

Elaine Paige As we can guess by the title, the album only features songs composed by the band Queen. Miriam (i.e. Miriam Stockley) This is the first solo album by wonderful vocalist Miriam Stockley. Also featured in the album: Ray Russell (guitar), Ian Lynn (programming, arrangements). 

James Galway James Galways is a flute and sax player from Ireland. His albums are usually plenty of nice covers of pop standards (from The Beatles to Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Chicago, etc.)

Wind of change features Ray Russell (guitar), Mitch Dalton (guitar), Joe Taylor (guitar), Andy Pask (bass), Kevin Thompson (keyboards), Dave Arch (keyboards), Ralph Salmins (drums).

Julio Iglesias Oh, well! If I was to think that I'd ever include Julio Iglesias in my website, I would have thought I was crazy. But Ray Russell deserves it all, even including Julio here. Nah, just kidding. Obviously, not my cup of tea, but I need to mention Ray's work with him. :)

Camilo Sesto Camilo Sesto was the most famous lead singer in Spain in the seventies. He played the main role in Spanish edition of Jesus Christ Superstar, and he was a complete fan phenomenon here. In the 80s, he retired from music business and went to live to the States. Several years later, he came back to my country, and it has released some low profile albums. Con ganas is one of those albums, featuring great British musicians: Ray Russell (guitar), Alan Parker (guitar), Nigel Jenkins (guitar), Paul Westwood (bass), Richard Myhill (keyboards, arrangements), Graham Preskett (keyboards), Graham Jarvis (drums), Barry Morgan (drums).

The Catch This was the previous band to Eurythmics, a trio formed by Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart and Pete Coombes. This was their only single, and it was produced by Ray Russell. Soon after, they changed their name to The Tourists, adding more musicians. 

Rolf Schimmermann Rolf Schimmermann is a keyboardist from Switzerland.

Suru features Miriam Stockley (vocals), Fredy Studer (drums), Ray Russell (guitar), Dill Katz (bass), Tony Roberts (sax), Stuart Brookes (trumpet). It was produced by Ray.

Jenesaisquoi - volume 1 was also produced by Ray, with Ray Russell (guitar, keyboards), Mo Foster (bass), Tony Roberts (sax), Andrew MacIntosh (sax), Graham Preskett (harmonica), Simon Phillips (drums), and it features vocals by Miriam Stockley, Mark Jefferis and Sam Howard.

This is a 2CD comprising tracks recorded from 1989 to 1995. The first CD is a live recording. The album features: Rolf Schimmermann (keyboards), Fredy Studer (drums), plus Ray Russell's band, also adding Miriam Stockley on vocals and Paul Etterlin (guitar). With Ray Russell (guitar), Dill Katz (bass), Tony Roberts (sax), Stuart Brookes (trumpet). 

Mark Jefferis Multi-instrumentalist, Mark Jefferis recorded for the label B&W, so it's not unusual Ray Russell produced and his friends play on it. With Ray Russell (guitar), Mo Foster (bass), Simon Chamberlain (keyboards), Josh Phillips (keyboards), Tony Roberts (sax), Simon Phillips (drums), and backing vocals by Miriam Stockley.

VV.AA. (various artists) This is a project by late actor Donald Pleasence and singer Barbara Dickson, produced by Hugh Murphy, and mostly composed by Roger Brown. The narrator is Donald Pleasence, and the different roles are sung by Barbara Dickson, Ringo Starr, Adam Faith, among others. The musicians featured are superb: Phil Palmer (guitar), Ray Russell (guitar), Nigel Jenkins (guitar), Roger Brown (guitar), Rod King (steel guitar), Keith Nelson (banjo), Gary Taylor (bass, guitar), Tommy Eyre (keyboards), Pete Solley (keyboards), Graham Preskett (fiddle, mandolin), Simon Morton (percussion), Henry Spinetti (drums), as well as backing vocals by Gary Taylor, Joanna Carlin, Pete Zorn, Paul Da Vinci and Roger Brown.  

VV.AA. (original soundtrack)

This was the soundtrack from the movie starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees. As many musical movies, it has its ups and downs, as no every performer was a real singer (Steve Martin, for example). But it has its fine moments. Originally a 2LP (my copy includes a big (& ugly) poster), it has 28 tracks, all of them written by The Beatles. Arranged and produced by George Martin, it features Billy Preston, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith or Paul Nicholas. But the great thing is when you check the credits list. With great surprises there.
