For Goo Goo Dolls singer Johnny Rzeznik, touring don't mean a thang if
it ain't got some hang. "It's hard to do a long tour with somebody
else," he says. "But the guys in Sugar Ray are cool. We opened
for Bush a couple of years ago, and that was the worst three months of
our lives. It sucked. There was this pervasive 'We are rock
stars' vibe going on. With Sugar Ray, I just want to have a good
time; I want to make sure we have enough baseball gloves and bats to play
some softball."
After openers Fastball and Sugar Ray, the Goo Goo Dolls hit the amphitheater
stage for an action-packed ninety minutes of hits (yes, you'll hear "Iris"
and "Name"), as well as nuggets from as far back as 1990's Hold Me Up.
There will also be a second stage featuring lesser-known acts such as Dovetail
Joint and Frogpond, in addition to a five-minute film. "I love to
talk to the audiene, but it's really difficult to have a conversation with
5,000 or 6,000 people," says Rzeznik. "So we called this dude, Bill
Barminski, to make a film. It's all animation and stock footage.
The working title is Greed and Action, and it's kind of an instructional
film about how to be a good consumer. We have this metaphorical 'money
shot,' like you see in a porm film. It's basically B-52 bombers dropping
Cadillacs out of them. Hopefully we won't bore anybody."
