John Lennon

of The Beatles

Date of Birth: October 9, 1940
Date of Death: December 8, 1980

Cause of Death: Assassinated by gunshot outside his home, the Dakota building in New York City. The gunman a deranged ex-fan Mark David Chapman, had asked Lennon for an autograph and then waited six hours for Lennon to return, before shooting him. Chapman pleaded guilty and received twenty years to life in prison.

Final Resting Place: Cremated, his ashes are reportedly on a shelf in Yoko's apartment in the Dakota Building.


Claim to Fame: Member of the Beatles, who along with Paul McCartney wrote some of the most memorable and enduring songs of the rock era. He became a peace activist after the Beatles split. Prior to the assassination, he had just released his first album in several years - 'Double fantasy'.
