Held between his thumb and forefinger was a small silver chain. And even though it was badly dented, it was quite obviously in the shape of an angel. “My angel…the angel.” Sarah stuttered, beginning to cry as she gently removed it from the fingers of the doctor. “What did this do?” She asked clutching her hands to her chest.
“Basically…it was lodged against his back, more appropriately against his spine. When Kevin fell back against the pavement that necklace absorbed the impact, and as you can see became dented. We think that without that it is quite possible that Kevin would have broken a vertebra and might be paralyzed.”
On hearing this it was too much for Sarah. Knowing that Kevin had been that close to never walking…she was so grateful. Turning to Nick, Sarah leaned against him, letting her tears of relief and happiness spill onto his shirt. The guys all acted very sweet, patting her back, soothing her and waiting for Sarah to regain control of herself. Once the tears had stopped flowing, she calmly asked the doctor when she could see Kevin. “Well…I gave him a pretty heavy sedative, so I doubt he’ll wake up before tomorrow. I suggest you go back home and get some sleep, you look absolutely exhausted.”
“She is.” Brian stated, taking Sarah’s wrists, “And I’m gonna take her home.” As Brian turned Sarah towards the door, he turned back to the doctor and thanked him for all his help as the other guys gathered up their things. Sarah, still in a daze, let the guys lead her outside, and put her in a cab with AJ, just to make sure she got home safely. And although she tried not to, Sarah fell asleep in the back of a cab, with a small smile on her face.
Once Sarah had arrived at her building, and AJ had brought her up to her apartment, Sarah immediately realized that all she wanted to do was sleep. But first… Sarah dragged her feet over to the closet across the bedroom, and pulled out a pair of Kevin’s sweatpants, and one of his Phat Farm tee-shirts. Slipping each of them on, she pulled herself back over to the bed, which had always seemed so full when Kevin was sleeping in it. His shoulders and arms always seemed to take up what seemed like half of the bed. Now though…it felt empty. Sarah felt empty. As she lay herself down on the bed she realized just how much of an impact Kevin had had on her. He was such a big part of her life that without him, Sarah felt like a part of her was gone. She knew that Kevin was coming back tomorrow probably, but all she wanted was Kevin…now.
Early the next morning, with the traces of dreams still in her head, Sarah heard the front door creak open and then slam shut. Raising herself sleepily on one arm, she listened for more sounds, but couldn’t hear any. Throwing the covers off of her, she padded out of her room, and over to the staircase. Right before she turned the corner, she could hear a low moan. Gasping in her breath, a hand covering her mouth, she whipped around to the top of the staircase, as her eyes immediately teared up at the scene below her.
There, below her was a man running a hand through his hair, and the other hand on his back. Slowly…slowly, he raised his head and smiled at Sarah through what she could tell was pain. “Hey babydoll.” He whispered, his lips moving into a slow, sexy grin that caught her off guard and made her gasp once again.
She flew down the stairs, the force of Kevin’s eyes and smile, and being propelling her faster and faster, until she was in front of him. Both stood there quietly just staring at the other, taking each other in after what seemed like such a long time. It was Kevin who spoke first, with 3 simple words that brought Sarah back to him. “I love you.” Then, leaning down slowly, his eyes roaming her face he brought his lips to hers and kissed her.
It wasn’t a long kiss, or even a very passionate one, but it was by far the sweetest. Kevin’s lips just touched hers and then he pulled them away, with what seemed to be like tears in his eyes.
“When I was in that hospital Sarah, I did a lot of thinking. Honest thinking, because I couldn’t escape from it anymore. I realized that you are so young…” Kevin brought a hand up to her cheek and then let it drop to his side again. “Only 19. Still a teenager even.” Sarah blinked back the tears from her eyes. What was he saying to her? Did he still love her? Did he think she was too young? Did he not want to marry her anymore? Kevin saw the pain and the confusion in Sarah’s eyes, and immediately realized what he had done.
“O wait, wait, let me finish!” He pleaded, his words rushed. “And as I lay there in that hospital bed, thinking only of you, dreaming only of you…I know about the pendant, the doctor’s told me. Your love made you give that to me Sarah, and…I realized that even if you are young that you are such a part of me. I never want to let you go. I felt so close to losing you when I saw that car come around the corner, I felt that you were out of my life forever. I never want to feel that way again.”
“Oh baby, do you honestly think that I would EVER let you go? I felt so empty without you…” Her voice trailed off as sticky tears flowed over onto her cheeks. “Done you ever scare me like that again! Getting all hurt like that, and making me cry every second of the day.” Sarah tried to joke, punching Kevin lightly on the arm, but he saw right through it. Grabbing her wrists as she broke down, he wrapped his muscular arms around her, and let her sob in to his shirt. “Without you, I felt so alone in this house.” Sarah sobbed, “I never want to be without you again Kevin, promise me you aren’t going to leave me like that again…please, I can’t bear it.”
“Never Sarah…never again.” Kevin whispered hoarsely as he covered her face with kisses. “There’s just one thing…I want to move again.” Sarah laughed for real this time.
“I don’t blame you sweetie. To the country right?”
“Yup, to the country. That’s where we’ll raise our children.” Sarah closed her eyes and smiled peacefully at those words.
“Children….our children. I love the sound of that.”
“I love you.” Kevin whispered again, his words finding their way straight to her heart. Kevin took Sarah’s hand in his and kissed each finger one by one. "I am going to love you like no woman has ever been loved Sarah. All I want to do is make you happy, live with you, and love with you.”
Pulling her arms around Kevin, Sarah moved her face up to his until they were just inches apart. “Forever, forever.” Sarah smiled.
“And ever, and ever.” Kevin answered back, echoing her smile. Then he kissed her, letting their smile become part of their kiss.
