The place has HUGE. Two stories, and almost entirely white. When you walked in, there was a huge expanse of nothing, then, to your left, was an open air room with a huge grand piano, and down pillows strewn on the floor. To the right was a hallway, which led to a family room, guest rooms, and more. Then straight ahead of the door, across a sea of white carpet, was a wrought iron staircase. Directly up it was the kitchen, with a dining room off that, then another hall next to it, down which was their bedroom. The whole thing was built to look like a balcony, and was absolutely beautiful.
Sarah ran through the whole house exploring, squealing with joy, caught up in the excitement like a little kid. At one point, she ran up to Kevin, and jumped up and onto him, almost knocking him off his feet.
"Happy, happy, happy!!!!!!!" Sarah laughed, and then planted a kiss on his nose.
"You haven't even seen our bedroom." Kevin laughed at her, caught up in her emotion and joy, feeling pleased that he had made her so happy.
"Oooohhh, yes!" Sarah exclaimed, her eyes wide. She wiggled down Kevin, and up the stairs, turning the corner to find their room. Kevin ran after her, he couldn't wait to see her expression. Sarah walked into the bedroom, and her mouth fell open once again.
In the middle of the room sat a huge queen sized bed, the frame done in iron, shaped to look like vines growing to the ceiling. It was covered in a white comforter, and there were extra pillows, just how Sarah liked it. Across from the bed was a set of drawers, with a stereo on top of it. Next to the bed was a walk-in closet, and behind a little nook, was their bathroom. Then Sarah noticed the painting above the bed. Done entirely in pastels, it was titled at the top, "Sarah in Love" and was a painting of a young girl sitting on a rope swing, gazing at a boy. The girl and boy looked hauntingly like Sarah and Kevin.
"Where did you find that?" Sarah asked, almost speechless.
"When I was having people look for furniture for the apartment, they found this in an antique store. I fell in love with it." Kevin murmured, never taking his eyes off the painting.
"It's beautiful." Sarah whispered, her voice breaking from the emotions running through her. She walked to Kevin, and picked up his arms, wrapping them around her. "Thank you for this, only you could have made it so perfect my love." Kevin and Sarah stood like that for a while, before Sarah broke away, with a troubled look in her eyes. "I'm gonna call someone ok?"
"Alright." Kevin whispered, seeing his reflection in Sarah's eyes, I'll unpack for the both of us." Smiling he handed Sarah the phone from the bedside table, and went to get their bags. Sarah settled into a corner of the kitchen, and dialed the number.
"Hello?" the voice on the other end cracked.
"RAI!!!!!!!" Sarah yelled into the phone, happy to hear her friend's voice again.
"SARAH!!?? Oh my gosh!! Where are you?"
"Rai, you're never going to believe this....I'm in New York City." Sarah heard a pause on the other end, then:
"With............???"
"Kevin." Sarah replied, trying her best to sound non-chalant.
"GIRL! You moved in with him!! YEAH!!!"
"Rai, I started again, I started going through that stuff, I started asking if he was going to be there for me...and all that crap I went through."
But did you tell him..." Rai's voice trailed off.
"Oh god, Rai, PLEASE don't ask....please." Sarah pleaded, lowering her voice to barely above a whisper.
"Sarah, I've got to. Did you tell him about...the barn?" Rai asked, her voice dropping to a whisper also.
Sarah raised herself from where she was sprawled on the floor, and went to make sure Kevin wasn't in earshot. Seeing that he was unpacking, and singing along to Sarah's Faith Evans CD (she would have to ask him about that later) she retreated to the far corner of the kitchen.
"No, I haven't told him, I didn't think it was necessary. I guess I just don't want him to know about what I did....about Jon....." Sarah's voice faded. "Say it Sarah, say the disgusting man's name." Rai commanded, her voice harsh, hate seeping into her tone.
"Jonathan."
"Good, now you listen to me Sarah, you have to tell Kevin about Jonathan. That way, he'll understand why you get insecure and need to be held, or why he needs to tell you he'll always be there. Promise me Sarah....promise me you'll tell him."
"I promise...I'll tell him."
"OK good. Look Sarah I gotta go, but call me ok? I love ya!"
"Love ya Rai, see ya."
"Bye Sarah." Rai replied, and then she was gone, with a click. Sarah pushed herself off the floor, and placed the phone on the counter. She walked slowly into the "music room" as Sarah had dubbed the room with the piano, and leaned against the huge window.
'Please God.' She prayed in her head. 'Please help me get through this, even though I've already lived it. Please help me show the love of my life what's inside me. I need to get through this, and still keep this man with me.' Then she heard Kevin's bare feet padding on the carpet behind her. She turned around, with her palm reaching out. "Kevin...." she saw him stop and felt his eyes search her face, she knew he could sense that she was hurting. "We need to talk."
"When I was 16, I was involved with a guy named Jonathan. I'd been with him since I was 14. He was the first guy I loved. He gave me my first kiss, my first real date....everything. But then, junior year, things started to change. He cut me off, pushed me away. I didn't know why, we had always been close until then...I thought it was me….I thought I'd done something to make him stop loving me." Sarah paused to collect herself, then continued.
"He started pressuring me to have sex. I said no the first times, but eventually...I gave in because I though that would make him love me again, but it didn't. He only resented me more." Sarah released her breath suddenly, and glanced quickly at Kevin before pressing on with her story.
"There was this old deserted barn near where I lived. Kids would go there to hang out, make out, or even have sex. Well, one night I was there with Jonathan. We were hanging out in a loft, pretty high off the ground, and he started pressuring for sex. I only had sex with him that one time, but he would ask for it on every date. I kept telling him no, and he was pretty pissed, so I decided to leave. As I was turning around to climb down the ladder, I saw him reach out, and just.....push. I can remember falling, screaming, and doing a flip in mid-air. Then I remember waking up in the hospital, with my dad pressing attempted manslaughter charges against him. If I hadn't flipped, and put my hands out I would of died." Sarah looked up straight at Kevin. He was obviously shell shocked, reeling from her story.
"That's why I asked you all that stuff on the plane Kevin. The last guy I gave my heart to almost killed me, that's why I asked those things, I needed to know you really loved me. I didn't tell you this, because I was afraid of what you'd think, I didn't want you to think I was cheap or something....I didn't want you to stop loving me. But....please don't be angry, please don't push me away. I want to stay here with you, and love you."
Sarah looked up at Kevin's face, and examined his strong features. She watched as he held out his arms for her.
"Come.....come here." He croaked, motioning with his hands for her. Sarah crawled forward, between his legs, and nestled her head in his chest.
"Please don't dwell on this ok? Please let's just keep going with what we have, because I love this, I love you, and..." Sarah drew her finger down his chest "I want you."
"Just give me one minute ok?" Sarah and Kevin stayed like that for a while, clinging to each other, but also clinging to the last bit of innocence in their relationship. After a while, Kevin sat up, and faced her. "I understand, and I forgive, and I love you."
"Good." Sarah smiled. "Then….I am going to cook for you. Pasta and cream sauce with mushrooms. It's fabulous." Then Sarah pushed herself up, and ran into the kitchen.
