The two of them woke the next morning to the phone ringing. Kevin rolled over groggily, and picked it up, fumbling for the 'on' key. "Hello?" he mumbled. Sarah stirred next to him, waking up and rolling over, listening to his end of the conversation. After about 2 minutes, Kevin put down the phone, and rolled out of bed. Walking to the closet, he turned and looked at Sarah, who was sitting up wearily in bed, her hair tousled, and lips swollen from sleep. She was still wearing Kevin's undershirt, and there were tear stains on her cheeks.
"Where are you going?" she asked, her voice hoarse, her eyes half shut.
"The guys are in town." Kevin replied, pulling on boxers and a fresh undershirt. "They wanna talk about our schedule, how long our break is going to be." Reaching into the closet, Kevin grabbed a pair of baggy sweatpants and a Phat Farm tee-shirt, pulling both on while he walked into the bathroom. When he came back out, he found Sarah up, a baby blue tank top on, her hair tucked behind her ears. "Alright..." Kevin said, looking around. "Walk me to the door ok?"
"Sure." Sarah replied, following him out the door and down the hall, her hand tucked into his. Once they were at the door, she reached up, and threw her arms around Kevin. "Baby..." She whispered. "I don't want you to go...not after last night. I want you to stay here with me."
"Sarah, I want that too, so badly." Kevin replied, leaning down, and grasping her tighter in his arms, then straightening up, and lifting her feet off the floor. He pulled his face outward until their noses were almost touching, and looked straight into her eyes. After staring at her like that for a while, Kevin set her down, and smiled at her. "I'm not going." He said.
"What?" Sarah laughed weakly. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm not going to that meeting." Kevin said.
"You're insane." Sarah told him, mock seriously.
"Nope." Kevin laughed. "I'm doing what's most important." And he picked Sarah up off her feet, and carried her back to bed. They both fell back asleep, still exhausted from last night, until the phone rang. Being the lighter sleeper of the two, Sarah leaned over and picked up the phone. The screaming of a record executive immediately bombarded her, and she pulled the phone back from her ear, and gave it to Kevin as he sat up, cross-legged in the bed.
"What do you want?" Kevin snapped back, obviously annoyed. Sarah watched Kevin's eyes roam the room, as they became small and tighter. He reached forward, and pulled Sarah into the space between his legs. "Listen to me!!!" Kevin yelled, "I will go with whatever you say, but I need to take care of some things here! Now put Brian on the phone!" Kevin exhaled heavily, waiting for Brian to pick up the phone. "Listen Brian, whatever you decide about breaks and whatever, I'll go with it, but please understand that I need to stay here today ok?" Kevin waited, listening to Brian's response, then handed Sarah the phone. "He wants to talk to you." He said.
"Hi Brian." Sarah murmured into the phone. "You want to talk to me?"
"Sarah, are you ok? Is Kevin ok? I know that Kevin wouldn't do this unless something was really wrong, so tell me everything's ok."
"Brian, everything is fine, ok? Kevin just wants to stay here...and I want him to also. Is that ok?"
"Yeah, well, I see where he's coming from. Ok...well, I gotta go, tell Kevin everything's cool. Bye." And with that the line went dead.
"Brian says it'll be cool." Sarah told Kevin, replacing the phone in it's cradle, and turning her eyes onto Kevin.
"This...I can't believe this." Kevin fumed mostly to himself. "They call me on my own home, ranting and raving, expect me to drop everything for them...that's wrong." Kevin flopped back on the bed, throwing his arms over his head, and turning to look at Sarah. "Screw..." Kevin enunciated, "Them." He winked at Sarah "Right girl?"
"Right!" Sarah replied, wrapping her arms around his chest, and laughing. "Now shhhhhh, I wanna sleep." Sarah whispered closing her eyes, and breathing slower.
"Oops, sorry." Kevin mumbled, closing his eyes with her. In minutes, both were asleep, curled into each other on top of the covers.
At about noon, Sarah woke up and found Kevin already awake, sitting on the floor, staring at her. After Sarah had woken herself up, and could think coherently, she looked down at him. "What are you doing?" She asked. "That's really creepy, to wake up and have someone staring at you."
"I'm just watching you sleep...you're adorable when you sleep."
"Thank you...I think." Sarah laughed at Kevin as he sat on the floor, holding his knees, and smiling up at her. "What time is it?" Sarah yawned. "I'm hungry."
"You should be, it's about 12 o'clock. Let's get something to eat." Kevin pushed himself up off the floor, grabbed Sarah's hands, and pulled her out of the bed.
They snacked on cheese and crackers, juice, and fruits and veggies. "Why do we eat so healthy?" Sarah asked Kevin.
"Because we're smart." He laughed, leaning over and kissing her.
She watched with a confused look on her face as Kevin grabbed the phone suddenly and punched in a 10 digit number. Kevin smiled at her and then spoke in to the phone. "Hey Mom!" Sarah's eyes grew wider as Kevin spoke to his mother in Kentucky longer. After awhile he handed the phone to her, and mouthed the words 'My mom wants to talk to you.' Sarah shook her head no at Kevin, she couldn't do this, not yet. Kevin gave her a look though, as if to say 'Do not mess with my mother.', and Sarah reluctantly picked up the phone.
"Hello?" She asked tentatively.
"Hello dear." She heard a sweet voice on the other end answer her. "How are you Sarah?"
"I'm fine Mrs. Richardson, how are you?"
"Oh please." She heard Kevin's mother laugh. "Call me Ann, and I'm fine, thank you for asking. Well, Sarah, I called to make sure you did something for me."
Sarah smiled at Kevin. "What would that be?" She asked quietly.
"I want you to make sure that Kevin and you come down to visit me alright? Kevin did promise me, but you know how men can be..." She laughed playfully. "So I want you to remind him every now and then ok?"
"I will do that for you Mrs. R-I mean Ann." Sarah corrected herself.
"Alright then...can I talk to Kevin please?"
"Of course."
"Thank you dear." Sarah watched as Kevin finished up his conversation with his mother, then hung up, and looked at her for approval, or acceptance, or something.
"She's really sweet, your mom." Sarah smiled. "She made me promise we'd come down to Kentucky and visit."
"We are!! You better believe it!" Then Kevin's smile faded, and he grew silent, and Sarah knew that he was either thinking very hard, or disturbed about something. "Sarah..." Kevin avoided her eyes. "I called our mother yesterday...On the plane, and we talked. I had to let her know that you're moving in with me, and we started talking. All I'm gonna say is she's still mad, but I told her to call ok? That was the whole conversation alright?"
"Fine." Sarah said, her lips pressed. "I understand you had to do that Kevin, that's your nature...and thank you for doing something I don't have the courage to do."
"No problem." Kevin replied, his eyes smiling at her. The 2 continued to eat in silence until Kevin glanced at the clock, looked back at her, and then at the clock again.
"What??" Sarah asked, giving Kevin a wary look.
"Sarah, I'm sorry, but I do need to go into the studio and make sure everything's alright...I'll bring the guys and some others back over here and we'll just hang or something, ok? I'll call you or something and tell you."
"Fine." Sarah pouted at him. "I see how it is."
"Sarah...come on, you know how this is, you've met these guys." Kevin whispered, brushing her hair away from her face. "OK?"
"Yeah." Sarah smiled at him. "I was only half joking. Go get changed ok?" Kevin gave Sarah one last kiss on the forehead, and then jogged down the hall to get ready.
Before he left, Kevin found Sarah in the kitchen cleaning up. "Love ya babe." Kevin murmured, pulling her back against his body. Sarah turned in his arms, and kissed him, catching him off guard. She moved his mouth more onto hers, and slid her hands up his back. "Baby, not now, alright?" Kevin choked, breaking their embrace. "I can't resist you, c'mon, who knows where we'll end up." Sarah laughed at him, and then pushed him out of the kitchen, down the steps, and towards the door.
Once Kevin had left Sarah finished unpacking everything, and put away things that had been left out. She was pretty lazy that day, putting her favorite albums in the 6-CD changer, and dancing around the apartment. At about 5:00 though, Sarah got a delivery of flowers. Upon opening them, Sarah found 2 dozen pink and white roses, and a personal letter from Kevin.
'My god.' Sarah thought to herself. 'He knows how to get to me, but I only love him more for it.' Then, she carefully pulled the roses out of their tissue paper wrapping, and went to get vases to put them in.
