ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN- Chuck Berry
---------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIBED BY kupfer
NOTE:
In this transcription I have notated the "Chuck Berry Lick" as follows:
e|----------------------------------|
B|-------10-10-------10-10-------10-|
G|-12b14-------12b14-------12b14----|
D|----------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------|
To those of you unfamiliar with the single greatest guitar lick of all time
a brief verbal description:
Hold down the note on the B string with your index finger, but don't play
it. With your middle and ring fingers bend the G string the equivalent of
two frets so it matches the pitch of the note on the B string.
This is very difficult for beginners, and almost impossible to bend the G
string that far on an acoustic. If you're playing this on an acoustic,
there is an easier method. George Harrison used it in the Beatles version
of this song:
e|----------------------------------|
B|-------10-10-------10-10-------10-|
G|-12/14-------12/14-------12/14----|
D|---s-----------s-----------s------|
A|----------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------|
where you slide into the note on the G string instead of bending. Doesn't
sound as cool, but much easier to play.
Illinois Jacquet invented(?) this lick on saxophone when he played with his
great R&B band in the 40's and 50's. Chuck was a big fan and stole the lick
and put it on guitar. He's used it in every single solo he's ever taken!
Here we go:
