Biography

The group known as "NIRVANA" emerged as a Seattle based band, along with Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and the earlier Soundgarden, that produced the more melodic "grunge" music. Inlfuenced by bands such as, the SEX PISTOLS, R.E.M, THE MELVINS, THE BEATLES, VASELINE, BLACK SABBATH, MEAT PUPPETS, LED ZEPPELLIN and THE POLICE (these are not all the bands).

Nirvana first started when Kurt met Chris (now Krist). Kurt first played with Krist and another drummer in 1987 and they both thought about keeping the band together. By the next year (01/23/88) they already had 10 demo songs ready with Dale Crover playing drums for them. Some of these demo songs appeared in their debut album "BLEACH". In November of '88, they released their first singles: Big Cheese and Love Buzz and in June of '89 their debut album "BLEACH" was released by Sub Pop.

Nirvana was then in search of a new drummer, a drummer that they could call "perfect" after having drummers Channings, Peters and Crover. They eventually found their "perfect" drummer, Dave Grohl emerged from the spotlight and joined the so called band "NIRVANA". They spent all year building up their next album "NEVERMIND". The talented group of 3 then searched for another record label and then went on to sign with Geffen Records (04/30/91). "NEVERMIND" was released in 1991 and took the world by storm. The album debuted at #144 on the Billboard. Nirvana then made a clip for the best song in the album (to me), "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" in August of '91. Nirvana then began their Nevermind tour in Toronto in 09/20/91, and the album hit #1 in 01/11/92. "We thought we'd sell a couple of hundred thousand records at the most, and that would be fine. The next thing you know , we go top ten." Kurt's comments on nevermind. Then Nirvana released "HORMOANING" to Japan and Australia in February of '92. With the band's success, they became even more successful when they performed Lithium at the MTV music awards and winning 2 awards for best new alternative video (Smells Like Teen Spirit) and best new artists.

In December of '92 Nirvana released another album "INCESTICIDE". In 11/18/93 Nirvana recorded an Unplugged session for MTV and released the album in 11/01/94. Cobain suddenly is struct by a coma in 03/04/94 and then gets up from his coma in 03/05/94. Kurt's body was later found in 04/08/94 and it becomes obvious that he committed suicide with a shotgun wound to the head. With this happening the world was shocked and Kurt's suicide note is raised in Seattle. While the remaining band members depart to form other bands, Dave Grohl with the Foo Fighters and Krist Novoselic with Sweet 75.
